Hi, first time poster on this thread! It's such a shame that the glitzy feel good Strictly bubble has burst. My post is an observation that all long running programmes suffer from the producers need/desire for it to continue to be popular. Big Brother was brilliant when it first started but due to its popularity, the producers introduced more and more extreme/controversial contestants, set them up to get plastered and behave wildly etc, Brookside did the same with its crazy plotlines, even GBBO had the bakers baking some increasingly difficult things before it decided to return to basics. In the olden days of Strictly, there were two dances performed - half the pairings did one, the other half did another and they were an introduction to the steps and rules of ballroom and latin dancing. As the competition progressed, the pairings were able to master more complex steps and lifts as their confidence and experience grew. Now, from the get-go, they've got the celebs being flung up in the air all in the name of what the producers call entertainment. I think they need to get back to the original idea of the programme. People will still watch, it might in fact attract a new audience. Sorry, long post but I hope you get me!
Yes I agree, plus get rid of some of the theme weeks, it’s stale.

I don't think anyone wants to watch 8 awful waltzes and 8 terrible salsas in week 1 though? the genie can't go back into the bottle. Look at the popularity of Layton's samba in week 1, or Danny Mac's CCC.

I would just be happy knowing that nobody was being abused behind the scene and that there is a mechanism for complaints to be heard and the welfare of celebs and pros to be prioritised, which hopefully there now will be.

Richard Osman and Marina Hyde spoke about it on their podcast this week and there were two interesting points I thought I’d share for those who don’t listen.

Marina said because so many people have been on and say it was so fantastic, it changed their life, it reawakened part of them they didn’t realise they needed means it now attracts people who feel they need that transformation. Those people are more likely to be vulnerable or have areas of their life they doubt which can make a very regimented training regime/being judged every week exacerbate those already existing concerns.

Secondly Richard said they will now need to show more struggles from the training rooms, maybe disagreements. The show has floated along being all sparkle and rainbows glossing over any tough points but those have now been revealed as always being there and as a production they need to lean into that and include it as part of the show. Not in a huge way, but acknowledging it is tough and not always smiles and laughter.

I couldn’t agree more with Richard’s point. Remember in the past like Alesha got so frustrated she walked out on Matt? I much preferred it when you saw the reality and struggle rather than everyone pretending they are best mates and they’re all happy all of the time.

I thought it was interesting what he said about how production want to present a certain image to viewers (100% positive and happy all the time), but then it becomes a problem when they start believing that image themselves and don't acknowledge when people aren't happy. A bit like toxic positivity

Although he was generally positive about how the BBC have handled it recently as long as they learn from it

Even without all the problems that have surfaced, Strictly needed to reset the show.
The theme weeks are very stale, Couples Choice should be dropped, dancers like Karen and Neil have been there years and add little. Also, I would like to see more couples actually dance the whole dance, without loads of ‘faffing about’.
I understand the need to keep two pros on the bench in case of injury, but don’t sign someone and never give them a chance (like Cameron and Michelle).
Also, the show is too long, two/two and a half hours ends up feeling like a slog. I know it won’t happen, but I wish they would cut back to twelve celebrities, with a few weeks more between the launch and the live shows. That would give time for the partners to get to know each other more, hopefully iron out any issues, and get a more graduated introduction to training.

Completely agree with cutting the number of celebs - those first few weeks are just painful. Also with 12 celebs they can filter them more easily. The last few series has felt like a few celebs are just there to make up numbers rather than anyone production thinks people want to see.

I think the majority average viewer probably doesn’t care about the abuse and is even unaware of all the headlines, from that perspective I think strictly is safe. Their biggest issue might be the signing of celebs.

I don't know about that, everyone's talking about what's gone on - even people who don't watch. I don't know anybody who's unaware of it.

I know people who watch it, who were completely unaware (until I mentioned it) or those that are aren’t that invested in the allegations, a merely said always thought Gio was a bit a snarky, surprised by Graz. None of it is going to stop them enjoying it as they are not overly invested in Strictly, so won’t follow all that is being reported. They just tend to watch it on a sat and sun and vote for their favourites.

I’ve just read a post on Juliet’s group about this that has made me think I need to leave it. Of course Laytons biggest enemy on there is also a massive victim blamer. Just in case you read here love you’re a really nasty piece of work. There is so much more I will say but I think this says what I want to far more succinctly.

I think I've got some kind of fascination with that page and I'm not sure it's at all good for me. I have never met anybody as bizarre as some of the people are there, they're totally obsessed with their love for people that they don't know and refuse to see that there could be a lot more to a story than they think they think. They also seem to be totally unable to take any criticism about the programme or any of the pros and lay all the blame at the feet of the celebrities (with a bit on the press too which is the only thing I agree with). Will seems to be getting it in the neck at the moment because he didn't say no loudly enough. They're even still defending Graz to say that nobody knows what sort of slap it is and it was obviously a one off in the pressure of the situation. They're 5 minutes from saying that people asked for it!

Amanda Platell’s latest article on SCD has crucified Amanda A. I think she knows the Gio investigation outcome. But that article is bitchy and nasty. If AA has been suicidal before how can Platell live with herself if the unthinkable happens.
I've read several articles which talk about the pros and how we shouldn't criticise because it will damage their mental health when there is no proof. Fair enough if they didn't then absolutely crucify the celebrity. Double standards in action everywhere.
