Has there ever been a true surprise winner?

Or, maybe not a 'true surprise', as such, but one that was more unexpected and not the favourite?

Since I've been properly watching (from 2018) there's never been a winner that has not been the favourite and seemed obvious for weeks before the final.

From that time, the closest I'd suggest would be Stacey vs Joe, but even then, Stacey was favourite, and was ahead in popularity by quite a bit on SM amongst the general viewer. I had no doubt she'd win.

Bobby winning would fit the bill - wouldn't a shock like Layton - but would definitely be a surprise.

Did anyone expect Joe McFadden to win against Gemma, Debbie and Alexandra???

Obviously Joe was my favourite (glasgow and my old dear fecking loves heartbeat) but I defo thought Gemma or Debbie would win. Also felt that Alexandra might have won because she was an outright fabulous dancer. Joe seemed to go under the radar a bit.

Chris Hollins? I can't remember now but he was up against some v good dancers

There hasn't been a surprise winner since Ore. Last year, there was an element of competition with Hamza vs Helen but even Hamza had that winner's momentum for weeks. Everyone else had been obvious wins and had no real competition.

I don't think Ellie would have been unstoppable if she was up against different people (if Helen, Hamza or Rose were in this year's cast for instance), but even she is by far the most obvious winner of her year and an Ellie win would be of zero surprise to anyone.

Joe McF was the only one who hadn't been in a dance off going into the final, so I wouldn't call his win a surprise.
I suppose Ore winning after two dance offs was a bit of a surprise, but also not really, because he had a very good final.

Joe was the bookies favourite going into the final, especially after the Charleston and then their AT in the semi final with the weird lift that made everyone shriek. I was a bit surprised at the time because I always thought it was Debbie's to lose, even though she'd been in a dance off

I don't normally bother arguing with people on twitter, but this has got to be the funniest exchange I've ever had. This head just randomly decided to unmask himself as his real issue of course being nothing to do with the professional dancer thing. Absolutely mind-boggling to imagine what kind of reply he really expects me or anyone to give to that. I just blocked him. 🤷‍♀️

This is on Layton's post, btw. But you know, he's so whiny for complaining about imaginary bullies.
The most hilarious comment on that is 'my biggest issue is two men dancing together' I mean get a bleeping grip! 🤣

The whole ideas of the pros being a happy family I think is partly true...if you fall into the pre pandemic clique. They were very biased towards Gorka last year and it seemed kinda frosty towards the 3 new pros. The newer pros seem to stick with each other for the most part.

That whole wave of pros who came in 2013-17 were like that. They seemed to alienate the remaining OGs when they first arrived.
Remember that story in the S*n about Gio freezing out the newer pros? Could be bollocks/taken from here or there is a grain of truth.

Yes I suspect it's a bit of a cycle. When the long awaited cull comes along for some of the long time pros and we get an influx of new pro's I bet this group will be more welcoming and a genuine 'happy family' will form again at least for a few years.

Honestly i don't know if strictly is like this every year but it's seriously like the wild west out there rn i've never known such stupidity.

So on top of bleeping #diannegate and the crap coming from her camp ive now been called a traitor by other grown ass women because apparently i should of boycotted SCD the week Nigel left and the fact that I've continued to keep up with the show proves that I have no regard for how badly bullied he was and disgustingly unfair his run on the programme was.
im like wtf !

Nigel has said on his own account how much he loved his experience, loved being with Katya, is healing but still gutted that he couldn't carry on but apparently his own opinion means nothing if your team Nigel you're supporting bullying if you haven't boycotted or made a formal complaint to the beeb.

For sure. Wouldn't it be nice to have the likes of Vito, Nikita & Jowita as the veteran pros.

Ironically, I'd heard that Brendan & James were among the most welcoming to new pros back in the day...

People take it way too seriously! It is entertainment, not life and death!

I always think too about @Willow9999 saying that they barely interacted with each other at Blackpool. The partnership is what makes a lot of people connect with a celebrity. The other 2 pros in the final have excelled at this as they have put their focus into showcasing and developing the celebrity and have developed true connections with them.
And the crying went on and on too!

I don’t know what’s wrong with some people. I’ve loved Nigel for years, I was amazed when he signed up, and his partnership with Katya was fantastic. I’m still gutted that they left the way they did. I have no doubt he would have made the final. But that doesn’t mean I would stop watching the show, I love Strictly, even with dodgy judging decisions and rabid pros. Shirley was very unfair to Nigel, but she always has her favourites, she does the same every year. If these other people want to complain to the BBC they can go ahead, but it’s not up to them what we watch. The bloody cheek of it.

Exactly.
i want to be happy he did strictly
the actual man they're supporting has said He loved it, he wouldn't change a thing except he wishes it hadn't ended like it did with an injury
Yet somehow adult women with lives have decided that the show needs reprimanding and this whole chapter shouldn't be spoken of because of his trauma.
I mean he's apparently fine and will probably dance on Saturday night on that same show you're boycotting but yeah sure ladies go off 🙄

Yeah, most years there's at least one couple with a few over-obsessed fans. Sorry some of them are being dicks to you, just ignore it.

I had a look at a few pages of the Nigel & Katya Appreciation Thread last week, and yeah, some of the posters there were a little intense lol. Lots of wild conspiracy theories flying around. A lot of them seem very convinced that the judges and/or producers hated Nigel and did everything in their power to get rid of him and would never have let him make the Final. I do think the judges were unnecessarily harsh to him at times, and seemed to be expecting too much of him, but I don't think for one second they or the producers wanted him out. I'm pretty confident the show was setting up a redemption arc for him, and the plan was for him to get a 39 or 40 for his Charleston, and then the injury derailed their planned narrative. But nothing's going to change the minds of the people who are convinced someone had a personal vendetta against him.

Seconded 😀
I also wouldn’t be surprised if Bobby’s showdance wasn’t pencilled in for Nigel.

The Dianne stuff is bonkers. It never fails to amaze me how such seemingly innocuous people can attract fans prepared to come to such rabid defence)
