You know, I really have no idea why I didn't expect it to happen this week, I guess because I think this week Layton has probably done his most traditional dances without 'tricks' and yet I have a quick glance at the instagram comments (on everyone's clips, not just his) and on DS and find it's still a deranged litany of 'there was no Rumba in his Rumba!' and 'there was no Charleston in his Charleston!' 'two more showdances!' 'all just gymnastics!' 'I prefer the contestants who actually danced the dance they were supposed to dance' etc.

What the duck is actually the matter with these people?!

You know I think I have slightly more respect for the ones who actually own up to it and say 'yeah, he's too flamboyant and I don't like it' than the ones who are all like *gasp* *pearlclutch* 'I am the least prejudiced person in the world, just ask my gay friend Trevor from work, how very dare anyone suggest my dislike could have anything to do with his sexuality blah blah blah' and then proceed to write a 1000 word diatribe every single week and post it under every clip about how he's the only person with professional dance experience who's ever appeared on Strictly before because everyone else's doesn't actually count somehow, especially not Nigel's, no not because he's straight and white, how dare you. And it's not fair that he's there because he's been perfect from the start, but also all of his dances are tit. And he just twirls and flips around every week and gets 10s without actually doing any of the proper steps, but also he's a professional dancer who can do them better than Nikita, blah bleeping blah.

Some of these people are so bleeping stupid I don't know how they're still alive. I saw a comment with dozens of likes about how it's exactly the same as if they brought an ex-Strictly pro back and had them dance as a celeb, and another one saying they may as well just hire Layton as a new pro. Ffs, even Robbie and Jake aren't considered qualified enough to be Strictly pros, and there's no question they have far more training and experience than Layton.

I can't tell how many of these people are actually so stupid and/or crazy they actually believe the nonsense they're spewing, and how many are just cowardly little trolls who know perfectly well they're making up total bullshit so they can air their bigotry without getting called out on it.
To keep the Donald O’Connor comparison going (😉) Donald came From a Vaudeville/Circus background and called himself a ‘hoofer’ who had learnt a couple of routines and tricks and looked like a fabulous dancer. When he was given a contract by the film studio in his mid-teens he had no training, really struggled with everything and had to learn to dance. Apparently, hoofers dance from the waist down and he had to learn to dance from the waist up to be a complete dancer.

That, to me, is what Strictly has given Layton … it’s progressed him from a stage dancer with a couple of routines to a more complete dancer.

Slightly OT but I adore Singin' in the Rain, and Donald O'Connor's performance is one of the all-time greats. Glad they dragged out Fit as a Fiddle - Layton is probably the only celeb they've had who could do justice and it probably took two male dancers. Would also love them to do Moses Supposes!

On-topic: the online clickbait headlines this year have been more deranged than ever. Lots of Ellie Leach says 'I Can't' to Vito Coppola etc but this one takes the biscuit. Scanning the story nobody even says this!!

The mad thing is that the British are meant to love an underdog. Layton didn’t get where is due to privilege or family connections. He got where he is through natural talent, sheer determination and lots of hard work. We should be celebrating him!

It’s quite clear to anyone who isn’t looking at him through a distorted bigoted lens that whilst he does have natural talent his previous training has worked against him a lot in this competition. He has found working in a partnership challenging and has had to unlearn things which is harder than if someone is a blank sheet like Bobby. I think his experience and natural talent does give him an advantage but you could argue that about most contestants. He has clearly worked very hard and deserves to be there as much as anyone else.

Fortunately the worst Layton complainer on one of the Facebook groups is refusing to watch the final - so that will make the group a nicer read next weekend!
It won’t stop her spouting her bile sadly. She is proud of her behaviour and sees that she is a champion of free speech.

Talking about flips and tricks, Annabel's entire salsa was flips and tricks and barely any salsa, bet they aren't criticising that.

If they just admitted to their prejudice based on Layton being camp, gay, black. Then at least we can stop pretending they care at all about the dancing because otherwise they would just enjoy the show for what it is, entertainment, and vote for Annabel.

God, those ones on FB are an absolute bag of twats. One name springs to mind who literally has not stopped for 12 weeks, and has the same middle-aged mean girls backing her up. To actually not watch out of some kind of twisted protest, seriously? Happily duck off to duck out of it then, love.

What if all the celebs did the same dance. So everyone do a Charleston one week, salsa the next and so on. That way it would be a fair comparison.
I think it would be more fair. Even if the just did it for the first few shows!! Or divided it into two so men do salsa one week while the women do the Charleston and then switch it for next week.

I love Layton and Nikita, but I genuinely hope they don't win because I feel like all the hatred he's currently experiencing on social media will ramp up massively and it'll overshadow what should be a joyous moment - people will start calling it a fix, and their anger at a "professional" winning will make their posts go from the current thinly-veiled homophobia and racism to being more overt as they spout their vile hatred, plus I'm sure the media will tear him apart too.

I'm thrilled they got to the final and I can't wait to see their dances next weekend, but I really hope they don't win so they can just have fun in the final and then slope off under the radar while the winner gets all the attention.
I am happy they are in the final but I think Ellie or even Bobby if he can keep up the momentum from last week deserves to win. I know you are all massive fans of Layton but I really don't think any celebrity with his experience should win Strictly. It's great to have someone talented like that to watch and break up the monotony of the poor dances in earlier shows but for me Strictly is about people like Ellie, Bobby and even Annabel. People who have to learn so much and who have no experience quite like that.

I just saw this on Reddit. Interesting that for all the people who moaned that Layton didn’t do any ballroom, until this weekend he had done exactly the same amount as Ellie and Bobby. The only one who had done more was Annabel (although not as many as it seemed!)
Layton and Ellie have done the same mixture of Latin, ballroom and specialist as each other.

Jesus, who has the time to make this stuff!?? 😂😂

I absolutely can't wait to see Layton most likely be the only one to do a pure Ballroom in the Final (I'm guessing the most likely picks are Layton - AT, QS, Ellie - AS, Paso, Bobby - Samba, CC) and still see gaggles of idiots raging about how unfair it is that he got to the Final by skipping most of the Ballrooms. The Quickstep doesn't count because it's fast. And Ellie skipping two Ballrooms as well is totally irrelevant. And probably in the same breath rage that it was so unfair and rigged that Annabel wasn't allowed to skip Salsa.

Layton has been nothing but classy in his responses to the vitriol on social media. I wish he wouldn’t read it. On the positive, ultimately he wins. He gets the career boost this will inevitably be. He gets the decent pay check & nice life. He gets a new friend who seems to love him. And multiple new friends from across the show. Hes living his best life. Those throwing hate are really not.
I didn’t know Layton at all before this season and I will support him forever after this. Wish I could vote too in the final, but since I’m not in the UK at the moment, that won’t happen :(

The thing is, Nikita used both Foxtrot and waltz in their AS … so while Layton hasn't done a full routine of either he is, at least, the only celeb to have dabbled a toe in doing all the dances.

I think if he does his CC again (likely) then the "rip jayd goddy ur wiv da angles now" crew will go wild, so it could happen. It just shouldn't.
Yeah.... it's a case of I'd understand but I wouldn't necessarily be "happy" about it... just like if it had been Annabel...

But I really don't think it likely!! It's between Ellie and Layton and I hope it's Ellie just cause I have loved all her dances this season (bar her Charleston funnily enough!).

I'm guessing the showdances could make a difference: it seems that Ore won on his. But as we've said, they probably don't get much choice. I'm hoping Ellie will nab the ballroom one, but she'll probably end up with a Doja Cat megamix dressed as a gif* (costumes supplied from Vito's fetish box).

*ETA for some reason this site converts g i m p to gif which is hilarious

For the final time, the most 'liked' dances on Strictly's official FB & IG.

1. Layton (Charleston) 69k
2.
Ellie (Cha Cha) 55k
3.
Ellie (Couple's Choice) 54k
4.
Bobby (Quickstep) 50k

And the most 'liked' overall with both dances combined;

1. Ellie - 109k
2.
Layton - 91k
3.
Bobby - 82k
4.
Annabel - 42k

Again, the bottom two reflected the actual bottom two.
