Trouble is he's really not as amusing as Anton. I hardly see the 'older' ladies clamouring to be partnered with him, whereas Anton, though he had his detractors, was always very popular with a lot of regular viewers. Aljaz was really the better Anton replacement and they've lost him.

Anton ‘got’ Strictly from the minute Lesley was eliminated over Chris Parker and Aljaz seemed to know instinctively.
I’m not sure Neil actually does in the same way Brendan never really seemed to catch on.
 
I don't think Neil really has the same appeal. For all that Anton couldn't do latin and was obviously no longer up to the job in his last few years as pro, he definitely appealed to a lot of the audience, had a sense of humour that suited the vibe and was very much the face of the show. Neil has only had 2 partners in 6 series and one of those times, was out first and generally he was viewed negatively. Neil's humour comes off cringey (hey Nell de Jaunse) whereas Anton's generally came off more charming/old school.

Plus, why not just rotate the older female celebs around the male pro lineup like the older male celebs and younger female pros? Especially since the show seldom goes above late 50s/early 60s in celebs so it's not that jarring of an age difference with late 20/early 30 something pros. I find it a bit weird to need an Anton type unless you cast an 80 year old who could be Kai or Nikita's grandmother.
 
I can imagine Neil hating having the older partners. As much as him and Nina gave it “you’re the one I wanted” last year they seemed to hate each other. Then there was that weird moment the year before between him & Anneka were she was having a drink and he pushed her arm down.

He surely can't expect to get the 25 year old ringers though? He's 40 himself (not old in normal terms but old for a dancer) and doesn't necessarily have a young look (sorry if that sounds impolite).

No I know exactly what you mean he’s a funny looking fella isn’t he?
 
To be honest I think this will be Neil’s last. They hired two new males when they only really needed one. I’m guessing they know that they’ll be substantial departures over the next two/three years eventually resulting in a new post 2018 cast. If we assume we’re right that this year is the last for Neil (age+ hasn’t really done a lot) and Gorka (injuries. Possibly doesn’t want to miss out on Mia growing up) that would leave Giovanni as the longest standing male pro who could start being given the older ladies(not out right anton duffers straight away but maybe your Saras who only go about half way etc)

We are in a transition period for strictly and the majority of the old guard have probably only got another 2/3 series left so Neil becoming the new anton is unlikely.

Yep, and if he hadn't been married to Katya, I think he would have been let go at the same time as Chloe - at that point, I guess they realised Chloe wasn't pro material and they were never going to give her a partner, and yet they kept Neil on...and then didn't give him a partner (until after all the Seann drama...)

Tbf, one thing Neil does well is on stage banter - when I saw the pro tour he was by far the best with his timing and reacting to the audience and he can laugh at himself - all similar qualities to Anton. It's just everything else doesn't quite fit and is a bit ick and cringe

Anton does loads of Latin in the Him and Me show with Giovanni.

Me and the old dear are long time fans of Anton and Erin and have seen their shows loads of times. But this year I felt it lacked something - was defo looking dated.

But the show with Anton and Giovanni - Wow!!! Brilliant show. And Anton was FABULOUS!!! As I said, he did loads of Latin and kept with up dancers half his age. He also did some lovely ballroom routines.

So he can do Latin but I think early on he went down the comedy route and it suited the show and him.

I don’t think Brendan ever ‘got’ it the way Anton did as he took himself far too seriously. Neil strikes me as the same: he might pretend to be a bit clownish, but purely on his own terms. Anton was happy to be subjected to any old tit as long as there was a cheque at the end of it (‘Bring on the wall!!!!!’)
 
lol, god, just checked in on the Appreciation Thread for the first time in months, just out of morbid curiosity to see if they were having a fit about Nadiya posting a couple-y photo with Kai (for the first time, I think?) and jesus, no one's said anything about the photo (yet) but they're still carrying on (well, a few of them anyway) that Nadiya has 'no personality' and hoping for her to be fired. You'd think they'd have gotten over it a bit by now. Especially had to cackle at one of them saying they love Luba. I'm sure Luba is lovely, but how can one meaningfully compare her personality to any of the other female pros that have lasted more than 2 weeks in the competition? No need to put so much effort into making up good excuses for disliking her, just admit you never thought twice about her before she ruined your shipping fantasies! 😂 😂 😂

Aw that is a nice pic of Nadiya and Kai. They have lasted six months (or maybe more..) despite touring etc so maybe there is hope for them!

Her lurching out a sparkly coffin clutching a glass of champagne is a Strictly highlight :D

I do think you can trace Anton and Brendan’s attitudes right back to the first series.

Anton and Lesley Garrett knocked out in the semifinal in favour of a young chap who ran round waving a cape round like a 3 year old and Brendan winning while having the first Strictly Curse Showmance and teaching the ingénue about The Beauty Of Dance (and gaining enough fans to see him through series 2 and Sarah Manners in a way that would have James Jordan’d him if she had been partner one)
 
I feel like Neil tries to fit the ‘sexy pro that the ladies fancy’ vibe that Alijaz, Gorka, Gio have and can’t really pull it off, but he isn’t a separate ‘character’ like Anton or Johannes, so he just gets lost in the line up.

Nadiya looks amazing in that picture. Kai certainly gets the beautiful ladies.

I think they can't come to terms with the fact they were so idiotically wrong about AJ and Kai, and that there was never anything going on between them, other than an ordinary competitive wish to win. So they have to buy into some bonkers half narrative that Nadiya somehow snaffled Kai (the witch!!) from under AJ's nose when she got injured, and what would have otherwise developed into a beautiful romance was brutally thrown off track by that talentless gold digger!! I still have a giggle when I think back to the mad 'logic' of that thread reading romance into the liking of social media posts.

The timing of them posting the video of AJ apparently calling Kai “baby” just hours after him and Nadiya posted that lovely photo, these people need help 😂

I just looked for the first time in ages and they are hoping Vito gets together with Nadiya leaving Kai free to see the error of his ways and pursue AJ! Why would they want this??
I think it is ok when these people keep it all in one (private) place, like the FB ladies convinced Rose and Gio are engaged. At least they are no longer causing division in the AT (though it is funny in the case of both Kai and Gio their threads have basically split into Shippers and Non-Shippers. God only knows what meltdowns are in store this year!
