The BBC really need to update the visual look of the show, it's really the same visuals and set from 2010 with a few tweaks here and there. I'm currently watching the Australian version (their 19th series debuted today) and it looks so much modern and fresh. Hasn't impacted the quality of dancing, not like DWTS in the States. The only thing dated there is their host, why they've brought back an old school style presenter who hosted it in the mid 2000s I have no idea.

Had a little chuckle at Brendan 'this man'-ing Brendyn with a Y, followed by his trademark 'I'd like to thank everyone in the building for working so hard' speech.

I actually thought it was very polite tbh no one else has acknowledged all the hard work & I thought his routine was good. Not crazy Arlene 10 good but definitely one of the better of the night
lol, yeah, I do enjoy Brendan's little speeches, and it did seem heartfelt. But they just seem a tad pretentious when they're so repetitive though, can't help but roll my eyes a bit!

I think the way people go on about his this girl-ing being disrespectful/misogynistic is a bit silly, especially since Saint Kai does it too. Even more so now that he's said it to a male partner as well.

Agree about the routine, wasn't in love with some of the choreography, but he skated it well, I'd have given it a 9.

I think he's better than Kimberly tbh, don't think I'd have scored her higher than him more than once, maybe twice. But of course, I know duck all about skating!

What’s the pro count looking like for this year? Are we due any newbies/necessary departures? Minus Oti, who I think we can assume is past the point of no return.

I’d quite like to see an older female pro step in and balance things out a little. Always felt ridiculous to me that the mature women on the show were given resident carer Anton to be looked after by, but older gentlemen were always ensured a beautiful twenty-something to rub up against - probably why half of them agreed! Going off the direction strictly seems to be taking though, I think we’re unlikely to see many taken on over the age of 25. 30+?As good as on their death bed 🙄

I feel like Anton was such a unique case - not only will they never have a female pro close to his age but I doubt any other male pro will be on past early 40s either.

I do think they'll need a couple of younger female pros because apart from Jowita, they're all over 30 and most have been on for 5+ series. The likes of Nikita are obviously signings who are securing the future of the show on the male side so let's get the same on the female side. Also might make it a bit easier if they cast another HRVY type celeb.

Beyond a few extra 20 something signings though, I don't see what would be wrong with hiring someone in their 30s to be a pro. If either Gio or Graz left, I wonder if they would take on Pasquale from the Irish show who has won there and in Belgium (and probably will be in the final again this year) - he'd be 33.

Anton was a real anomaly though and shouldn’t really be counted as in the real dance world would probably have retired by now moving into teaching and choreography. Latterly he was usually paired with the oldest female and had taken a bit of step back in the group dances. I don’t even remember him doing a music guest slot in the previous 2/3 series.

However It’s just straight up fact that at 34/35+ anyone who's a professional athlete or a pro dancer isn’t always at the same level they were at 25. Injury recovery isn’t necessarily as fast as someone younger yes there’s new treatments and surgeries but ageing is just a fact of life.

As sexist as people will say it is I think production are a bit reluctant to hire ladies in the mid 30’s because they might want to start families and whilst nadiya seems to manage having a child and dancing/touring overseas that might not be feasible for everyone. Some people simply just don’t want to be way from their families for weeks/months at a time.

Casting directors are looking to get a good few years out of pros so are more likely to hire somebody younger. Men can go on a bit longer but there’s always going to be somebody younger who can do eight pirouettes when you can do six.

I actually expect a full cast change over the next 3years so the cast will go back to being younger again. There’s a few pros who seem to be setting themselves up with other ventures that they can move into once strictly has finished.

Yes, Pasquale or Arduino who has done some of the choreo and group dances if they want another Italian.. People seem very keen on that Jake Leigh too, though I haven't seen very much of him.

Do dancers necessarily need to be at ‘the top of their game’ to be a Strictly professional though? Besides from the pro routines, are they really ever pushed that hard when dancing with a novice? This is a genuine question btw, my dancing abilities don’t span very far!

I'm pretty sure that Jake Leigh is more of a contemporary/commercial dancer. I don't think he has the ballroom/latin qualifications to be a Strictly pro.

I was howling at that. I had no idea how much I missed the trademarked ‘Brendan Cole Appreciation Speech’ until last night 🤣
The level of desperation to get it in before going to the judge's comments was hilarious!

In terms of when they hired pros, I think (correct me if wrong) Anton was the oldest ever male pro hire at 37 and Karen Hardy was the oldest new female pro at 35. And aside from Anton, Brendan has been the only pro who has survived past 40 (albeit only for 2 series after). Karen Hauer & Neil will join them if they stay this year.

Interestingly, DOI have 5 pros currently over 40 (Matt, Lukasz, Alexandra, Robin, Andy), I wonder if that show isn't as hard on the body so their pros can keep going when older (if asked back which many aren't).

Nearly if not all the current pro line up have at some stage won national if not world titles at some point at least once if not more than once. There’s also a decent amount who’ve danced all over the world on cruises and tours.

But just being able to make a reasonably decent living dancing professionally puts you at the top of the game really. People wouldn’t watch the show(or any show for that matter) if the pros weren’t top level dancers.

I danced growing up so consequently know of quite a few people who’ve gone on to do professional training. Only one is making a decent living from dance (I know of a couple more who’ve done quite well as choreographers rather than dancers)

Seeing as the covid restrictions are going to be ending this week in England I’m taking we’ll be back to a full season this year eg. a full audience and being able to go to Blackpool?

I bloody hope so. Something I didn’t realise I’d miss as much as I have is a full, live pro dance each week. Obviously in 2020 they were all prerecorded, but this year they limited the pros performing each week to whoever had been knocked out of the competition therefore didn’t need to be in a bubble, which I think may have been the reason why the pro routines this year were so lacklustre, because they couldn’t fully plan them. I watched a few 2019 performances back a while ago and it was amazing how, even though it wasn’t considered one of the great years for contestants, much more alive the show felt (to me at least).

See this is interesting to me. I don’t know whether it’s seen as the ultimate goal for professional dancers (I’m assuming going off the paycheque it’s up there) but I would have considered it a step down in terms of technical skill and ability, seeing as they aren’t having to prove the extent of their technical capabilities, only that they are capable of high quality ballroom and Latin, and are good teachers. Even two of the judges, Bruno and Craig, lack professional training in B&L, so I find it difficult to imagine the pros are having to push themselves to the limit in terms of skill. For example, Katya and Neil are both world Latin champions - I can’t imagine any routines they perform on strictly, pro or celebrity, truly provide them with a real challenge

I've really missed the full audience in terms of atmosphere.

Same; I'll give Strictly and the BBC their dues of making the best of the card they were dealt with having to deal with Covid but for the last 2 series have been a bit lacklustre for me in terms of not having a full audience there. Sometimes its a bit cringey and forced to see the celebs and pros having to cheer extra hard at the side every time a couple have finished a dance to makeup for a lack of an audience.

does anyone else think Neil and Katya are back together? They are posting alot of each other on social media.
