That sort of thing was supposed to be what Couple’s Choice was for but on Saturday we had 3 unofficial CC’s with Jayde, Will and Tony and for a show that’s supposed to be sparkly fun it was dipping into, oh no not again territory. Just do a bop and a twirl to a song that means nothing to you for Pete’s sake.
Be more Hamza basically, I don’t think Ecuador! meant anything to him and it was lots of fun.

If the scores continue as they are and she gets to do a Couple’s Choice, I wonder what her ‘story’ will be? I wonder if they’re told it’s meant to be a sob story (for want of a better term) because if it wasn’t, you’d think Tyler’s would be about becoming a DJ or something like that

It’s going to be difficult as she’s already spoken tearfully about body image/representation and her losing her sister, either of which ordinarily be the CC narrative (much as I loathe the whole Cc/‘story of my life’ vote-wringing cack), and I’m not sure that going over it all again is going to do her any favours.

It’s funny how your preconceptions about the contestants can be completely upended. I thought Jayde would be a great dancer and bring bags of performance value to her dances, I though Matt would be a pretentious dick, I thought Will would be a ‘cheeky chappy’ and I thought Tony was only there for the cheque. Turns out I was wrong on all four counts!

So James then 🤣

It’s not beyond the realms of possibility. They’re so painfully boring that I forget that they’re there on an hourly basis, so they could very well sneak into the final without anybody noticing because everybody thought they’d been voted out weeks ago. 🤣

I think Helen might have a Big Breakthrough (tm) - there is a lot of public support behind her, she just needs a #moment.
I am not so sure about Molly - she has Pixie Lott written all over her. I think Ellie S. has a shot at the final - again, popular, obvious backstory, people like Nikita.. Fleur I think will be tripped up by her technique in ballroom - I can see Shirleygate mark II rolling around again (unless she really steps it up and they bring it every week).

Agree with the rest.

For the Katya/Vito fans/shippers (erm, me) - enjoyed this clip of them rehearsing their pro dance bit. Always seems weird that the pros give it so much welly in the dances and we don't see most of them properly!

I had Ellie S as a pick for the final after the first couple of weeks, but now I'm not so sure - she's doing everything right, but I just get the sense they're plateauing a bit at the moment (probably not helped by being on first last week and doing a salsa in the same show as Hamza).

And just that there seems to be SO much competition for those 4 final spots right now

But as is the case with everyone, it does feel like anything can happen

Saturday was just came across as a bit one upmanship though … I see your mental health awareness and I raise you addiction … I see your addiction and I raise you a deceased family member … I see all that but my partner is having a tough time but doesn’t want to mention it … yes, but my celeb also had a cold … and all Tyler could bring to his CC was a nice family who weren’t there and some fish and chips.

Exactly this! Exactly!

If I find a dance so lovely it brings a little tear to my eye, then that's great. If a farewell speech makes me emotional, then it's because I care and was invested.

But having sad/emotional/triggering issues or stories endlessly shoved in my face is not entertaining for me and is unlikely to elicit any real emotion as it feels too forced. This is really a production issue and seemed to start with the wheeling out of the nans but is getting worse.

Plus, I get upset when I see other people upset and I don't want to keep seeing that.

I don't know if its Jayde's 'sob stories' that are winding people up as much as the easy time she's getting from the judges seemingly because she has an 'issue of the week'.

These were two of the best openings to any tv series period. The fact they're not being used this week is a tragedy

I concur - and I suspect from this that we are pretty much the exact same age!

I don't remember it being as bad as it is this year for the sob stories 😕

We’re seemingly headed into X Factor territory now.

I don’t expect anyone to bottle up their emotions, ‘stiff upper lip’, pretend they’re fine when they’re not, etc., but I also don’t think a Saturday evening light entertainment show needs a ‘special lesson in personal hardship’ every five minutes.

This was exactly how I felt about it.

IIRC the current producer formerly had something to do with the X Factor. So whilst I am immensely grateful for the quashing of the ‘comedy’ VTs, the relentless focus on earnest worthiness can get in the bin.

Yeah I get what you mean. It seem like there was actually a bit of tension as well because Will milked having a cold so much all the pros were like WELL ACTUALLY MY PARTNER ALSO HAD A COLD. Add Tony and Jayde into the mix making us cry and the fact that so many of them seemed to find their dancing feet this week, it was probably a bit much.

When it was more fun in a Pandemic, it’s a bit of a begger really.

Maybe manipulative is the wrong word but I think jayde knows exactly what she’s doing she’s a performer and knows how to work an audience. I don’t know if the sob stories are coming from her or production (possibly both) but I don’t like being played emotionally like that even if I can see straight through it. I’m aware this probably makes me a cold hearted witch but maybe it’s because I never used my own grief like that. It just feels a little tacky to me… I know I’m tit but this dance is my sister so you can’t possibly put me in the dance off or I’m doing this for the big girls don’t vote me out.
Exactly how I feel. Laying the groundwork of this being trailblazing/ empowering/ emotional etc before you’ve danced a step is not for me. Compare that to how Hamza works his butt off to produce a dance full of energy and amazing technique and Matt who mentioned his Mum and sister right at the end with such tenderness. Sorry I’ve ranted in your post!

Matt probably would have spoken about his mum and sister further down the line had he not gone up against someone who was technically better in that dance off though. So he's getting credit for being tender and classy about purely because he didn't have the chance to do something more meaningful. The producers probably thought he'd go on longer.

Wait for Helen to do a dance to Stronger or Because of You or something like that.

I actually have a feeling Kym will withdraw. Knowing her dad is sick now it makes sense that she's been a bit spaced out on the live shows.

Personally, I don't mind a bit of back story about the competitor's struggles (e.g. Rose or Will Bayley) as that can be inspiring for others but it's a really fine line for me. JJ was a turning point; even my 10 year old was rolling her eyes at the screen.

I think that's one of the reasons Bill Bailey was so refreshing, he refused to gush, cry or tell us a sob story.

The best pro dancers on the show and they look so good together 😍

About the sob stories; I’m not averse to people showing emotion when it’s genuine and in the moment, but Jayde has cried every week at this point I think? It comes off as being contrived. First it was the superfan little old me schtick, then I’m doing it for the big girls and then it was for her sister. It’s just… a lot?

I don’t know if it was on here but I read a comment from someone saying if you say you’re dedicating your dance to your dead sister then it does put you above criticism because it wouldn’t be “in the spirit” if that makes sense? Like if you didn’t love it you’re a heartless bastard. It’s also why I hate CC - as well as them being technically shite 9 times out of 10 (I thought Rose and Gio’s CC was a pile of shite but I didn’t dare say it at the time cos everyone was googly eyed over it).

But Matt had already been in the dance off and hadn’t played either the deceased relative or medical problem card, though … he had 2 weeks‘ to drop them on the table if he so wished. Same has Helen, she hasn‘t done anything to highlight her own problems via the medium of dance.

i don’t think you can pull people up for what they might do or compare them to people who already have. More than once

this is exactly where i’m at with it.

i don’t mind genuine expressions of emotion in the moment - i thought tony was completely from the heart and unrehearsed when he spoke after his dance. likewise matt in his leaving speech and alexandra after her jive a few years back (which she got absolutely torn apart online for) and probably a number of other examples.

i just don’t like being told “hey! look at this! you should be finding this sad! this should be making you emotional!” - which is the vibe i’ve been getting from jayde and arguably from a lot of the CCs we’ve had. it loses all its reality and becomes almost manipulative.

i always use greg wise’s CC as an example of how to do it “right”. it was emotional for him but it was a complete expression of love for his sister that didn’t demand that we feel a certain way about it. and for that it was lovely to watch.

Ashley Roberts springs to mind. She was celebrated for talking about grief and loss.

I love the glitz and glam but I also love seeing people being human. I don't see them as sob stories, I see them life events that make up part of who these people are. I kind of like being taken by surprise and finding myself crying at a glittery, silly dancing show. Like I did over Tony 😭

They can't win in a lot of ways. If they just go on and do their dances and have a chat they're boring, like Kym. If they share something personal, they're manipulative.

i equally agree with this though! i don’t think they can win in a lot of ways - if you’re too chill then you’re disinterested and not taking it seriously, if you’re too emotional then it’s fake, if you love your nan then you’re “wheeling your nan out” etc… it’s an impossible balance to try and maintain and i get how hard it must be. female contestants absolutely seem to get it worse too: alexandra was dragged for sharing emotion about her mum (who had literally just passed away) while ore seemed to never stop crying and won 🤣
