I think we are overthinking it. There's so much pretense in TV anyway. I just see it as spreading it out over two nights.
Indeed. I don’t really understand why people think they ‘pretend’ it’s live. They don’t.
When they say ‘last night’ that’s because the dance/incident they’re referencing was screened last night. ‘Last night’ is correct within the timeframe of when most viewers watched the live broadcast of the Saturday show and the point at which they’re watching the Sunday show.
Jools Holland doesn’t introduce the Hootnanny countdown by saying ‘it’s 3 weeks, 5 hours, 28 minutes and 10 seconds to midnight, as per the precise moment at which we filmed this show: ten, nine, eight … ‘
Then again, they have to add announcements to repeat screenings of shows with phone votes explaining that the phone lines are now closed, so perhaps lots of people do assume that if something is on their TV it has to be happening right at that very second.
