I have to disagree with your experience, it’s not been mine at all. My friends and I may have been more selfish when we were younger (we’re talking 10-15 years younger than the SATC characters) but we grew and matured together. Also, not everyone gets married/has kids, so do they just have to keep the tit friends?

I think the main reason us older millennials and young Gen X who were teens/early 20s when it came out didn’t pick up on the selfishness is that we were just a bit blindsided by how amazing their lives seemed! I know for me, watching SATC as it went out on C4, I just wanted to be as rich and glam and empowered as they seemed when I got to age 34. Every other 34-year old woman on TV at the time was a housewife or a frazzled mum. I overlooked a lot of their crap qualities because I found their lifestyles aspirational, and their attitude to sex and relationships was revolutionary at the time.

Women I’ve spoken to who were the same age/older than the characters say much the same thing: the show was so zeitgeisty and aspirational, plus such an original representation of women, that they didn’t really think too hard about what a witch Carrie could be.

Also, a practical thing but I think you notice more about characters when you binge watch a show. We were watching an episode a week back then! More time to forget stuff in between!

I actually don’t hate the fact that Carrie is often a bad friend; I do think most of us are bad friends at points in our life and it is somewhat realistic. I have more of an issue with Carrie’s shallowness, which went through the roof in the two movies. It felt as if the show was saying women can’t be interested in fashion and also have depth.
yeah the level of shallownesss was awful looking back, this is something I wonder how they deal with in the new series. Things like squealing at new shoes or whatever, or Carrie going into shoe shops (with pregnant Miranda) trying on shoes but telling the worker she can;t buy anything..

Oh god I hate that scene so much! It’s a perfect example of privilege and how Carrie is so unaware of hers.

Any of them with Alexander Pertrovski 🤢

Ok conspiracy theory time: in the last few episodes the writers purposely made him awful so they could justify Carrie and Big getting back together.
What made them such a horrible couple is that they were attracted to the most shallow of attributes of each other. Petrovski loved what Carrie represented, a chic woman with no care in the world that he could parade around. Meanwhile, Carrie was captivated by this wordly man from a mysterious and distant country thus creating a totally unrealistic image of him and their relationship. After that infamous dinner with the girls and their SOs, the last thing on her mind should've been to move across ocean for/with him.

Makes an entertaining TV show, but having a Carrie-like friend must be DRAINING.

I had lots of tit friends at that stage of my life. It’s the selfish stage (or should be) before you settle down. My friends now are almost a completely different set of people and much lovelier. People grow and in my experience one of the first things to go after getting married and having a family are the high maintenance friends. I just didn’t have the energy for them any more.

What I’m saying is I watched in my 20s and didn’t find any of the characters that unusual or high maintenance but rewatching these days with a mature head on my shoulders I see them differently.

Excellent point

I cringe now that I watch it and to think that I used to want to be Carrie or didn’t find her behaviour as problematic as I should have. I was Very dramatic and self obsessed in my early 20s so she was relatable to me then, but it’s cringy as hell to remember that person. Thank god I’ve grown up and gained perspective on life because I would not want to be like Carrie now and going in to my 40s still having drama and unsettled relationships. tit friends have gone, tit men are not tolerated as easily, quality not quantity, no amount of Manolo Blahniks could make up for that

Of course not everyone has the same experience!
