We all know this is a certified flop, however I would lie if I said that I won't give this blatant cash grab a watch. There is nothing they can do to recreate the magic that were the first three seasons. SATC is a clear product of its time, and that's ok. It's why we watch it, to go back in time when the world seemed simpler and to reflect.

Imo it's too late to introduce any type of diversity, I would've respected them more if they stood by the original series and simply said that it's an outdated view on an extremely privileged (and borderline incestuous) bubble which in no way represents NYC on the whole.

Are there any episodes that you simply cannot bear to watch? For me it's the one where Samantha starts dating a black music producer, just thinking about it makes me cringe.
yes this one and also the one with the bi character that carrie dates

Any of them with Alexander Pertrovski 🤢

he was the worst of all the bfs followed by Berger.

I see some script dets have been leaked . . . (or released to drum up interest). It appears that her and Bigs relationship is in trouble. FFS. I dated heaps of crappie men in my 20s. However I sure as hell didn't marry one and if I did I certainly wouldn't have spent 20+ years back and forth in a crap cycle. I always thought they should have stayed done after the affair (which sadly for my moral compass is my fav part of the whole series).

Didn't they say that they planned for the affair to be the end of the Big storyline but because he was such a fan favourite they kept him in? But agree, I think the way they kept writing him back in after the affair was incredibly unrealistic - e.g. when he comes to Aiden's cabin and they bond? Wtf. Not a thing.

The cringiest thing for me was always Big's dialogue. He's supposed to be 'charming', 'charismatic' and 'witty' but I honestly don't see it. Some of his and Carrie's back and forth is actually total gibberish. "How do you feel about soul mates"? "Well, I like the word soul, and I like the word mate. Other than that you got me." Okay...?

That was the first one that came to mind for me too. It was so cringe.

I’ll never forget a scene In that episode where Samatha and the producer guy were listening to music, she asked who the song was by, and he said something like “oh it’s this new up and coming artist”. The song was by…. De La Soul and Chaka Khan!

Big is like the male version of a Manic Pixie Dream Girl:

Mysterious and quirky
Incredibly rich and generous (like a dream man)
Exists only to support & provide for the main character, and create storylines that revolve around her

I actually can’t get too mad about it, because god knows there are a billion TV shows and movies with the female equivalent.

Though I love the song Moon River . . . and when he put that on in empty apartment - gasp. I had big type relationships (without the wealth unfortunately) - eventually you do realise that banging the head against the wall (or bed head) HURTS! Carrie was an awful friend. Samantha could be pretty selfless. Remember her giving a struggling Miranda a coveted hair appointment and offering to babysit.

Samantha was the best friend to all of them, in my opinion. Giving Miranda her coveted hair appointment and babysitting Brady, doing PR for Carrie’s book at the cost of a lunch and two martinis, never judging Carrie for her affair with Big, her emotional reaction at Miranda’s mum’s funeral, and she was the only character to NEVER put men before her friends!

I really hate it when Samantha gets into a relationship with Maria and the others mock her and witch behind her back.

Yes! Everything you said here is why I loved Samatha! I love the episode where she fell out with Charlotte, there were just so many great moments, Claire-Anne, Charlotte’s uptight friends, Sam storming out saying, “and you can FORGET Samba!!”

yeah he never says anything interesting, other than being rich I don't see what about him is attractive at all, no wonder he had no friends in the series :ROFLMAO: . No surprise the relationship will be on the rocks in the new series, I do not know how anyone could stay with someone who didn't turn up to a wedding

omg and when claire-anne says something like "I could just eat you, in fact, yes, I WILL eat you" :ROFLMAO:

Samantha only gives Miranda her hair appointment because Carrie says something to her regarding the way she is treating Miranda though? She pushes Miranda and Brady in a cab without a backward glance because they impromptu decide to go shopping, and Miranda is visibly upset. Samantha was just as flawed as the rest of them, she is also surprisingly nasty to Miranda in the Hamptons when she says Brady can’t attend her (daytime!) party, - even though she knows Miranda has no one she can ask to look after him. She also vanilla shames Charlotte a lot and seemingly has no issues at all with sleeping with married men - only having a problem with it when their wives start freezing her out of the NY social scene.

They were all flawed and in their own different ways IMO, although Carrie was obviously the worst offender.

Oh yeah!! God I hated him so much! What a little prick

BUT I didn’t realise what a crappy, selfish friend Carrie actually was until I watched them all over again in my thirties. She’s terrible!
This was my biggest take away when I properly rewatched the series again a couple of years ago that I never really realised first time around…. That Carrie is such a selfish friend - I honestly don’t understand how she maintains so many friendships!!

Remember how people would always decide which of the 4 they were? I cannot imagine looking back why anyone would be a carrie :ROFLMAO: she is also tit at her job, imagine having one column a week and never meeting deadlines . In a way hre character reminds me of Emily from Emily in Paris

I had lots of tit friends at that stage of my life. It’s the selfish stage (or should be) before you settle down. My friends now are almost a completely different set of people and much lovelier. People grow and in my experience one of the first things to go after getting married and having a family are the high maintenance friends. I just didn’t have the energy for them any more.

What I’m saying is I watched in my 20s and didn’t find any of the characters that unusual or high maintenance but rewatching these days with a mature head on my shoulders I see them differently.

how old were they supposed to be? I thought they were all mid 30s and samantha was slightly older?

I have to disagree with your experience, it’s not been mine at all. My friends and I may have been more selfish when we were younger (we’re talking 10-15 years younger than the SATC characters) but we grew and matured together. Also, not everyone gets married/has kids, so do they just have to keep the tit friends?

I think the main reason us older millennials and young Gen X who were teens/early 20s when it came out didn’t pick up on the selfishness is that we were just a bit blindsided by how amazing their lives seemed! I know for me, watching SATC as it went out on C4, I just wanted to be as rich and glam and empowered as they seemed when I got to age 34. Every other 34-year old woman on TV at the time was a housewife or a frazzled mum. I overlooked a lot of their crap qualities because I found their lifestyles aspirational, and their attitude to sex and relationships was revolutionary at the time.

Women I’ve spoken to who were the same age/older than the characters say much the same thing: the show was so zeitgeisty and aspirational, plus such an original representation of women, that they didn’t really think too hard about what a witch Carrie could be.

Also, a practical thing but I think you notice more about characters when you binge watch a show. We were watching an episode a week back then! More time to forget stuff in between!

I actually don’t hate the fact that Carrie is often a bad friend; I do think most of us are bad friends at points in our life and it is somewhat realistic. I have more of an issue with Carrie’s shallowness, which went through the roof in the two movies. It felt as if the show was saying women can’t be interested in fashion and also have depth.
