Murder island

I remember watching the murder game in my room and wishing one day i could go on the show.

Although I always watched the end bit through my fingers as i was terrified by the final scenes with the killer šŸ˜‚ maybe I wouldnā€™t have done well on that show! Think I was about 14 at the time though so maybe i could cope with it now.

Haha yes, I was the same, terrified by the final scene. I was only 13 but still don't think id cope with it now šŸ˜‚

Just watched the catch-up last night.
Got to remember this is written by Ian Rankin so will have been designed with plots and twists. Even Tuesdays programme showed a tenuous link with many of the introduced characters

  • Hamish - was he jealous of his wifeā€™s relationship with Charly?
  • Tony (pub landlord) - seemed tetchy and made a slip when he said that Charley rented the Manse cottage ā€œwith himā€ before correcting to ā€œfrom himā€. Is he the potential father of Charlyā€™s unborn?
  • Sonya - If Tony is the father, was Sonya jealous. Was that why the stab was to the abdomin?
  • Jean - was she jealous that Charley was pregnant after starting a potential relationship with her. She seemed visibly upset when she found the positive test kit
  • Freddie - Pressurising investor. Is he involved to try and get the investment through hence confronted Charley to ā€œquietenā€ her opposition to the development
  • Alecia - under pressure to get the development through in 48 hours. Was the first to find the body. Did she confront Charly the night before?
  • Photographer wifie flagged down by Alecia, not immediately seeing a link here, but her son was looking shifty in the background when his mum was questioned.
Other questions not answered?

  1. Whatā€™s in the diary?
  2. where did the Ā£2000 come from? Was it money towards an abortion? Why was Charly getting away? Who from?
  3. whoā€™s the father?
  4. why did none of the detectives ask the basic question on timeline of where they were at the time of death.
  5. What was the time of death?
  6. whatā€™s the significance of the footprint? What shoe has that tread?
  7. Was there a log of who was ferried over to the island? (Maybe not required but should have been asked)
  8. 2 Glasses of wine, was only one with lipstick? Need to check back, was the second one used? Did someone go to The Manse with Charly after the pub meeting? Who was that? Does it match the timeline of what the suspects stated?
Its essentially a play on a book, so expect more ā€œevidenceā€ to come out and more twists

I did feel for the contestants though when they told them they should have looked inside her hot water bottle at the crime scene and they will have found her diary! Especially after they were warned about touching and contaminating the crime scene.

They were warned not to walk on blood, then two of the teams did exactly that.
They were warned about not contaminating the scene and then picked up the wineglasses when the sign said not to touch.
The two boys (who seem the best so far) then grilled Jean just after being guided to pause and let the suspects have space to open up.

Although my money is on that Alissa, for the sheer fact she said "Ive found a body, I think shes dead"
Wouldnt you say someone unconscious rather than body? Body to me implys you know they're dead.

I think all the stuff about the eco development will be a red herring.

Although itā€™s just the first episode and likely to reveal more clues, Iā€™m drawn to Sonya.

  1. There was the narrative that Charly stopped her in the street and said she wanted to put what happened in Glasgow behind her and wanted a fresh start. This suggests there was something that happened between them (and Tony???)
  2. She want to leave the Island and go back to the mainland, so would want to sell, Tony is the opposite (little map with the three key people on decision to sell)
  3. If Tony is the father and it happened in Glasgow, this might be enough to push Sonya to confront Charly.
My back-up is Logan, the photographers son. Only because he is a character that was shifty and quiet.

Just though of another couple of questions

  1. what was the murder weapon?
  2. where is the murder weapon?

ā€˜The Murder Gameā€™ was the greatest show thatā€™s ever been on TV! Gutted they only made one series ā˜¹ļø

Watched the first ep of this last night, but it was pretty slow going. And I know they had to cast numpties as the amateur detectives because they canā€™t have someone sussing it all out early on as then the showā€™s over, but dear god these people are dim!

Was it any better this week? Anyone want to do a quick recap for those of us (me) who didn't bother to tune in but might watch if there's any improvement on the first episode?

This is so shite but Iā€™m on maternity leave waiting for baba so nothing else to do!! 1) the two girls are the worst I want to slap them. Last week when one of them was like oh thereā€™s like metallic stains on the wall someone who works with metal or something and the other girl was like thatā€™s the fingerprint dust. FFS. 2) another woman keeps calling the guy Hamm-ish! Stop!
3) the above comment about introducing themselves was something that annoyed me as well 4) the two guys were questioning the woman in the shop last week and kept stuttering and ummimg and ehhhhing. Pull yourselves together!!

The drugs storyline i think is going to twist things up. I think that will hinder the detectives although it is unknown atm how that will fit in with the murder storyline.

I think the scenes when charley was talking to sonya in the first episode are going to be crucial, and that something happened in glasgow but we probably wont find out what until later on.

I had a thought wondering whether charley could have been paid to be a surrogate? She was staying on the island short term but she is renting a house from the pub landlord. In this latest ep sonya mentioned to the detectives in passing that the pub has rooms that they operate as a hotel. So why would a single woman on a short visit to an island rent a whole large house from someone who runs a hotel? Why not just a room? Although it hasnā€™t been established how long she was intending to stay i guess.

The surrogate theory made me think of the pub owner and sonya. She works with children and i guess it could be possible that she cannot carry children and they had a private agreement that she would have a child for them but then charley changed her mind and wanted to keep the baby?

The same could also be said for hamish and his wife. She could have been carrying his baby but then his wife fell in love with her and hamish started drinking and becoming violent so his wife might have thought bringing a baby into that situation would be impossible?

Edit to add, glad the senior detective stepped in with the team made of neighbours. The younger of the two is incredibly rude towards the older lady. Never listens to her thoughts and always speaks over her. I hope they send her home and keep the other lady as i think she has the ability to listen and think more than the one who seems to over exaggerate everything.

I used to love that show! And when I ask people if they remember everyone always says no!
It was so scary when the murderer got one of them in the end!

I searched the murder game on youtube and found a few episodes. Obviously not good quality but i watched the first 15 mins or so of the first ep and i was tempted to watch some of the actual game but was worried it might have aged badly and i would be disappointed! I might try and watch the end of an ep to see if its as scary as i remember šŸ˜‚

They have introduced a drug storyline into the mix. The large bloke franky (staying in the mansion with the young girl who found charlys body) had a scene where he was threatening the young lad (son of the photographer who was shifty in the background when his mum was being interviewed in ep 1). This then led to the lad finding a deflated dinghy off the coast of the island and calling franky to report his findings. So presumably this is how drugs are being smuggled onto the island but so far little else is known.

It was also revealed that franky knows tony, the landlord, as tony used to be a bouncer at one of his clubs and has history for being quite ā€œfirmā€ (he was hesitant to use the phrase violent) when dealing with difficult customers. Charly also used to work odd nights as a dj in the same club. It seems they all knew each other but all accounts say they know each other in passing, not as friends or anything deeper (unless they are lying).

Sonya and tony were interviewed together and when asked if they knew charly was pregnant, sonya said no. Tony then said he knew as charly had told him. Sonya then immediately changed her story to she knew, but tony had only told her that morning. The detectives interviewing them (sorry i forgot which team it was) were then scolded for not following up for more info from tony about the father/when he knew/why he knew etc.

The two older women had chats with their detective separately and he told them they need to work as a team or they face leaving. It was more about the younger of the two talking over the older lady, not listening to her and basically belittling her.

There was too much backstory about the contestants for my liking. I know itā€™s a game show but I want the best detectives to win and for us to join in with the guessing. Without meaning to be a witch, I donā€™t care who had a heart attack playing football or who has been through the worst divorce when that is eating up air time. If the show want to go down the talent show sob story route, do a bio on the teams and stick it online for those who want to know or make the show longer to accommodate it šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

I agree about not needing the contestants back story and some of the acting is still dreadful.

The young lads immediately took his wife's side against Hamish. I thought the police were supposed to be impartial. I quite like the surrogate theory. I think the drugs will be another red herring. Charley will just have had a cannabis plant for her own use.

The money will be payment for something baby related. Perhaps someone wanted her to have an abortion and she refused or she was refusing to hand the baby over. I hope the story line gets a bit more interesting next week.

Thanks for the recap @Instaflop. I actually don't think I'll bother with the rest of this. I like the concept, but it doesn't seem it's really working so far. I will keep an eye on this tread to see if it picks up!

Iā€™ve just had a quick flick through an episode of the murder game which a few of us loved, and there are a few things there which I wish they had kept for this show. The contestants were working as one big team and splitting up to interview suspects and check crime scenes then meeting up to share their findings. I think this would be a better way in murder island than having just essentially 4 contestants and the audience not getting the full story.

Also the detectives were a lot harder on the contestants and more in character which made the contestants act professionally rather than playing to the cameras.

The actual actors, set, story everything really seemed so groundbreaking even watching it now, nearly 20 years later!

I also braced myself and watched the killers game, the last 5 mins of the show where a contestant gets killed off. Not as scary as I remember! šŸ˜‚ credit to them though as I wouldnā€™t be going out alone at midnight to an abandoned factory!

I know murder island is made by different people to the murder game but essentially itā€™s the same show. I will stick with it until the end but iā€™m not sure there are enough episodes for a satisfactory ending without rushing or skipping over key evidence.

Itā€™s clear that this is not designed as a game show for us all to get involved in, but an adaptation of a book written by Ian Rankin.
Books are well written when they provide detailed accounts and plenty of opportunities with the telling ā€œevidenceā€ not divulged until much later in the story.
This is where itā€™s let down by the ā€œdetectivesā€ failing to ask the pertinent questions all us armchair sleuths are screaming out for.
