Bogan is kind of hard to define, it’s somehow a positive and negative term. It’s not at all like a chav, the closest thing to a chav in Australia would be an ‘eshay’ - but even that’s not quite true. To me, bogan means to be kind of basic, a little unsophisticated but it has nothing to do with social class or education. Bob Hawk, Scott Morrison (aka Scotty from marketing) and even Anthony Albanese (aka Albo) are some examples of bogans who became Prime Minister. There are different sub-categories like ockers, larrikins, cashed-up bogans.
Think big fast cars, catching big fish, big tv, shorts and flip flops (or thongs if you’re Aussie), swearing, loving a barbecue. Clothing styles and tastes vary massively. Most Australians are bogans to varying degrees!
