Maid - Netflix

Unfortunately that’s what happens, I would ask my ex to leave my house and every occasion he would never leave so I was stuck with him! It is scary when you watch something and it mirrors parts of your own life. Admittedly I’m in a very different place now but that bit just really got to me.
Though I don’t really ever think trauma leaves you, you just learn coping mechanisms.

Yes as it happened to my auntie as he would then threaten to come to the shelter and shoot the other women 😱 (this was in the 80’s). She did eventually get free from him and then she trained to be a counsellor.

I really liked the show.

But I was thinking, maids really know everything. I'm now side eyeing by housekeeper. 😅

I wonder if she drinks your wine and tries your clothes on? 😜

I was getting really frustrated with her, but yes she wanted to do things by herself.
Loved the lady from the shelter, so reassuring and kind.

Same! Oh my goodness, she was so, so lovely. As was the one who worked in the 'boutique'. What a rewarding job that would be - it'd be very hard though (for me, just thinking I'd never be able to switch off and would bring it all home with me).

I just finished watching it. I'd be curious to see how it would go if they chose two different endings ...

1. Marry Mr Perfect and live happily ever after (I think he would have been supportive of her writing career); 2. Move in with Regina (I think she would've been supportive of her writing career too - and probably could've introduced her to all the right people
Andy McDowell needs to win an award for her remarkable performance - she was just incredible!

I really grew to love "Alex" - she was such a lovely, honest, hardworking lady, and a fantastic mum. I woohooed when all her own cleaning jobs started coming through. The rapport between "Alex" and "Maddie" was just so special (and 100% believable).

So I did end up watching the rest of the series and I didn’t cry anymore.
I did like how they ended it in a positive way, an abuser can make you feel like leaving you will have nothing and won’t be able to survive.
Alex showed determination and a lot of strength to make sure she had a better life. She allowed herself to follow her dream and not be held back.
I saw so much of my old self watching it.

Omg I had no idea they were mother and daughter in real life too!

I was reading all the reviews on IMdB ... gosh, the one star ones are quite mean. I think it's one of those series that you do have to watch it to the end to appreciate ... I was tempted to stop watching after the first couple of episodes as Alex annoyed me a fair bit (but then as the story continued, her true personality shone through).

I'm so sorry to hear that happened to you :(.

Alex returning to Shaun seemed understandable in a way - he was clearly making an effort, and she thought that he had changed. Plus, she was desperate for somewhere to live. It was heartbreaking seeing him snap in a second - and returning her friend's car, not giving her money for her phone ... ugh! - he just wanted to cut her off from everyone she knew so he could control her. I'm not sure people like that ever do change ... as much as they might want to.

I just finished this . I found myself crying at ‘happy’ parts and bits that I felt silly for crying at 😅😭 and felt like an emotional mess . Amazing acting . Andy does deserve awards for her performance, she was amazing! I did not know they were mother and daughter in real life, explains how great they worked together x

I found some aspects of it a bit ridiculous (her getting offered that fabulous accommodation that she clearly couldn't afford) and found it strange they were cleaning peoples houses but had to take their own vacuum?!

My cleaners bring their own vacuum even though I have one in the cupboard too 🤷🏽‍♀️

Really enjoyed this series. I loved how it showed that abuse doesn’t always have to be physical, and I really hope that it will give at least one person the wake up they need to realise they deserve better.
It felt very “real life” as opposed to the classic fairly tale ending.
I found myself shouting out to the tv when her mum was being so aloof and annoying, and I think it really added to Alex’s character that she was able to cope with her mother’s non-answered answers to her questions and just general unreliability.

The only thing that made me feel a bit down was that Alex only got out of her situation because she had a natural talent for writing (yes she worked hard at the shelter etc, but she only got to leave the town because of her scholarship). There are a lot of people who aren’t born with that gift, and I can imagine it would be all the more tempting to go back to your abuser if you don’t have those opportunities available to you. That’s not a slight on the show, more an observation as to how difficult it is for the average person to escape these situations.

I suppose bringing their own means they won’t have to pay if they damage yours?!

It is based on the true story of a writer who was in that situation.

Was reading an article today about Margot's (Alex) boyfriend in real life and within the article it talked about how she used to date Shia Labeouf until his ex accused him of sexual battery, assault and emotional distress and so she ended things with him and let the actress/singer who accused him know that she believed her and stood by her. It doesn't say if she experienced the same with Labeouf but it was before she played the part of Alex, so she obviously had some insight into what her character goes through with her boyfriend then?

I finished this tonight and I honestly loved it. I’ve been there. Emotional abuse is just awful because you end up feeling so worthless and you believe your abusers words. It destroys you. Thankfully I’m away from that and I’m happy, I found the strength.

I loved the little girl playing maddie, I can’t believe How good she was for being so young! You know when you watch something and they’ve got young child actors who are basically just mute or look so uncomfortable but this little girl was fantastic and you can tell her and Alex really had a strong bond. Andy McDowell was fab too.

The memoir is staggering and far grittier. I follow the author on Instagram and take real pleasure on how well she is doing for herself.

I’ve just finished Ep6 and although it’s really good and the main character is an excellent actress. I’m finding it very depressing. I know it’s real life and it’s not a bed of roses but I feel it’s so bleak, maybe I’m not in a great place myself and it’s too much.

I found it got quite dark and depressing towards the end and I hated how she let it overwhelm her when she had seemed quite strong in the earlier episodes but yes, that's life unfortunately but at least she overcomes it in the end.

It’s the insidiousness of an abuser changing his behaviour to get what he wants then reverting (and more) plus having NO safety net. No alternatives. It is reality, yes. I am so glad it wasn’t glossed up for feel goods.

The author doesn’t touch on her parents much in the memoire (different enough from the series) and I was intrigued to know how someone with a middle class up bringing and set for college ends up spending 6 years below the poverty line totally alone.
