Madeleine McCann Netflix documentary

I never understood how they left their kids in the apartment, is this a generation thing?
Some of the things I used to get away with as a teenager freak me out that at some point my kids will be that age and I have no idea how me and my friends made it home every night safe.
The thing that always bothered me most was they left the door unlocked, any of those kids could have woken up and gone to look for their parents and opened the door to find them. Very very bizarre
It’s not a generation thing, it’s neglect.

We won’t know if social services have been involved as it’s all confidential.

My friend told me of an interesting theory she’d read today. Ever since I’ve not been able to stop thinking about it and believing it more and more. Don’t quote me on all the facts as it’s just speculation from bits I’ve heard. Gerry was suspected to be part of some paedophile ring? The theory goes that Kate and Gerry sold Maddie’s and possibly the twin’s services for the night. Whoever was supposed to be coming in to abuse the kids on that night (hence why they were drugged) did actually kidnap Maddie which wasn’t the plan. So that would explain Kate straight away jumping to “they’ve taken her”. Genuine shock that that wasn’t part of the deal but as it’s such a horrific crime that could thanks them both in a lot of trouble they can’t mention a thing. I know this theory doesn’t explain the cadaver dogs etc. Just thought it sounded somewhere believable.

Would also explain why the door was left unlocked, so they could access the apartment

I have always been horrified they left their children. I had a daughter who would’ve been the same school year, the case was shocking. But I could not imagine ever going out for a meal and leaving an apartment. Utterly disgraceful. And disrespectful.
But there’s no way they could’ve left the kids for peadophiles, surely. That’s the sickest thing I ever heard. They could be killed or ripped apart. You couldn’t do it. No one could.
And all this calpol as a sedative, ok there used to be medised and there’s phenergan, but calpol is paracetamol and not a sedative 🤷🏻‍♀️

It probably is a generational thing. Although my kids are now 30 ish, back in the day on holiday, you would go out for meal in the evening as a family and the once your kids were tucked up in bed asleep go to the bar in the same hotel for a drink as a couple. I am sure you all sound horrified by this but a) ask you own parents what they did and b) times have changed and part of that change is being wiser in hindsight because of McCann case.

I definitely think it must be a certain type of person. No way it is generational. My own parents never left us as you describe and neither did their friends leave their children. I can’t actually believe people would do this and think it normal. Anything could happen as soon as you walk out.
I know a woman who left her kids sleeping (2&9) at home while she went to the shop (where I bumped into her) it wasn’t generational just really crap parenting.

My parents always took me and my brother with them even if it meant a late night (we were on holiday after all) and they would take us to a family friendly entertainment bar, not be selfish and go for a piss up and leave us in a strange apartment. I am in my thirties now so my parents would have been the same/similar generation. I think it’s just plain irresponsible it doesn’t matter what generation you are/were. It’s not an excuse. Don’t have kids if you’re not gonna look after them properly and put yourself first. Simple.

Mysteriously, we seemed to have produced two wholly functioning, professional, successful adults who we love very much and who love as back. Our work here is done. And I refer you to my original point (b)...Different times.

I haven’t watched the documentary or read much about this in years, so forgive my ignorance, but does anyone know why the apartment door was left unlocked? It’s bad enough leaving the children unattended but why didn’t the parents at least lock the door??

If that makes you feel better

I’m sure kate and Gerry might have produced a professional successful adult in Madeleine had they not left her alone in an apartment.. like the above says.. you were just lucky this never happened to your children or it might be them we were talking about in this thread. Very ignorant.

Probably couldn’t be arsed to use the key, would have taken too much time and effort out of their joyful evening

Just asking but Is it actually the normal thing to do to leave children unattended?? That British male news reporter with long hair on, I think episode 1 said he’s left his child in his hotel room to go out with his partner too? I actually questioned my husband if there was something wrong with us that we wouldn’t do it 🙈 And our kids are 13+
No I don't think so. My parents would leave me alone from 13 onwards with the doors all locked (not overnight, just if they popped to do the shopping) and that was only because we had a dog. :ROFLMAO:

I assumed (although assuming anything with the McCanns is dangerous ground I admit) that it was down to the number of people potentially checking on them and because it felt like they were not far.

Weird how Gerry kept changing his story about which door he used. At one point he said he checked on them via the locked door.. if he knew the other door (which was closer) was unlocked why would he not access the apartment through that door as it was closer and easier. Another odd inconsistency in their web of lies!

I totally agree with it not being a generation thing when the story broke I was 21 & my boyfriend now hubby was 23 a few weeks later we where on holiday in Spain while getting ready for a night out we were chatting about the Madeline McCann case which was still very much in the press. Even then in our early 20s we could understand why these children where left alone
Years later now in our mid & late 30s with one child who we had with the help of fertility treatment (which was how they had Madeline) I am even more baffled to how they could leave there three children alone!
All children are precious but when you have that much long for child after years of infertility it's a gift which makes it so hard for me to understand why you would leave them alone to have dinner?
My parents bought me with the to have dinner every holiday I was ever on we do the same with our child. So what if there routine is disrupted isn't that the point of holidays in general?
As for social services I don't think they cared because it didn't happen in the UK

I read that Gerry said that it would be easier for the kids to get out if there was a fire. Wtf?? How would a toddler & 2 babies be able to get out if their cots/bed in the pitch dark & navigate their way to the open door? It beggars bloody belief! 😡

Surely they would know where to start looking for her if that was the case.

I’m on the ‘I do believe they’ve done something/ know more’ side but I feel like that theory is a bit far fetched ( maybe it’s because I don’t want to believe there are people out there that would actually do that though)

I wonder if they do

Definitely not generational, I’m 30 my parents never left me, up until I was 13 when I got home on the school bus 30 mins before my mum did so I was home alone then.

My partner who is 33 was never left either!
