I really can’t believe how quickly fans of the show have turned so nastily on Jed, Vicky, and Martin on Twitter. For the last two months these fans have been waxing lyrical about the show, glued to every word, and oozing praise. The minute the ending doesn’t suit their own personal narrative or their imagined finale, these people start attacking the writer and the main actors who they have been enamoured with for weeks. Dreadful behaviour.
I reminds me so much of international football. When England are winning in the World Cup or Euros, everyone is excited, putting bunting out, wearing the shirts, flying the flags, holding parties and BBQs. The minute England lose and get knocked out, all the insults and abuse starts. The team is tit, the players are tit, England is tit, shirts are ripped off and thrown, flags are pulled down, parties are cancelled. It is such typical Brit behaviour. When things are going well, the country is great. When they lose, the country is a load of old tit. This same ‘build ‘em up and knock ‘em down’ mentality is being played out here over the last episode of a TV programme.
This disappointed, nasty, shouty, online overreaction is really not a good look and it says more about the fans than the show’s writer and actors. I expect there will be no series 7 now after this dreadful backlash. I bet that, even if a new series was in the pipeline, which I suspect it was judging by the latest series ending, they won’t even bother producing it now after such an aggressive backlash. And I wouldn’t blame them. Who needs fans who drop you like a cup of cold sick the minute your programme doesn’t end how they expect it to? All these desperate complainers have shot themselves in the foot by demanding a series seven. I don’t think they’ll get what they want now after acting like such slapped arses.
