I've never heard Lineker mentioning politics on Match of The Day tbh.
He's an overinflated ego mind you, most of his personal opinions come as he lounges on his Chesterfield, via the Twatter
He was quite keen on mentioning Donald Trump for a while. Always in a disparaging way.

I agree with you about his ego.

Anyway it has been a rough night for Gary after his team's performance in the Chanpions League.

I really rate Gabby Logan as a sports presenter, she's in a different league to Linekar ... but I remember her going off on a Donald Trump rant on the BBC once, it was really off-putting. Same with Naga Munchetty. To me it's all just 'showing off' or as Jobby put it quite well yesterday ... "The weird look-at-me gene', at he of all people should know!

I can't face Ferrari this morning, do report in if anyone listens. At least LBC don't have a TV feed ... imagine seeing Nicks bloated boat race in the morning!

I wonder if they're all carrying their Steve Allen totes and waving a Steve Allen tea towel. 😆
Groovy Gang Glasses all round

Think I'll switch off until the media has stopped discussing Gary Lineker. I wish he'd had kept his opinions to himself. He didn't actually use the word Nazi when comparing the current government to 1930s Germany but that was the implication. Lineker and everybody who casually uses the description should brush up on their history. Pre-war Germany was a nightmare for persecuted minority groups. When we have leaders who send out squads of soldiers and brown-shirts to beat up citizens in the streets, simply for being 'different'; when our cities are terrorised by the state sanctioned vandalising of temples and mosques, Polish shops and Chinese takeaways, then they can make the comparison. I'm sick to death of the knee-jerk and ignorant use of Nazi and Fascist to describe people with whose politics they don't agree.
Rant over. 🥵

Well done. Always good to get it out. The only thing that irritates me about using Twitter to comment on complex socio-eoconomic issues is that it's so bleeping reductive (reductionist)?. We need to have reasoned, intelligent discussion about these topics by academics, intellects aswell as the people who are actually affected by the matter in hand. Lineker will never go onto a neutral politcal debate type show to fully explain his views and opinions with evidence because he knows he'll be embarassed (not just Lineker, but he's the just latest example). It's just so bleeping lazy and ultimately counter-productive because a lot of people just dig their heels in on whichever side of the debate they are on. Rant over.

I like that you're free to post your opinion here and on other forums even though I don't necessarily agree with you.

So why shouldn't Gary Lineker be free to express his opinion?

I didn't say he shouldn't. I merely expressed my opinion of his opinion. Although thanks to the virtue signalling wokererati, that's becoming increasingly difficult to do without being challenged and/or being labelled a Nazi or a Fascist.

Just tuned in for the last bit of Ferrari's show (thanks Nick for inducing spittle flecked rage elsewhere) and caught the promo for O'Brien's show where he's criticising everyone for discussing Gary Lineker. What were LBC (apparently) discussing all day yesterday ?

It's all very well us laughing at Steve but I still think it could be a health issue. He never said much about his long absence last year. It could be that he needed time off for more treatment and his boss suggested that he simply call it a day.
I was thinking this also, there might have been some disagreement about the future.

Although seeing as he's such an institution id of thought they'd try to accommodate him. Having work to return to after treatment would be a great moral boost to him, sadly the opposite is also true.

Interestingly enough, Nick Abbot usually stops people in their tracks the minute they start mentioning fascists. He seems to be of the opinion it is a word that is thrown around far too easily.

Actually Maggie, you may enjoy the Nick and Carol podcasts. I know you're not a fan of Nicks but he is quite different on there and there's no noises! Carol obviously takes no nonsense either. 🤪

I remember listening to them many years ago. There was a time when Nick A. was my third favourite presenter after Nick F. and (believe it or not!) James O'Brien. Then the Brexit referendum happened and it all went sour. I still like Ferrari but he could do with re-finding his sense of humour, which made him so entertaining.

He gave no indication in his friday show that he wouldn't be back on the monday. Short of an imminent terminal diagnosis, if it was health based, there's no reason why it couldn't have been announced as a break (indeterminate).

Ive found through listening to LBC a lot this week is that their output is so different to say ten years ago.

There obviously doing very well both commercially and with the big names there grabbing i.e Matlis and Marr.

I think the problem is Steve's show and style is just completely different with the mainstay of the channel generally. It's a shame in a way as I feel like LBC has defiantly grown since he's been there but sadly it just left him behind. He's been in the headlines a few times this year for quite negative reasons and I just think the management have probably just thought enough is enough. I think he's probably receive a healthy pay off and with his health not been as it was it was probably the right decision. It's poor he didn't get a goodbye fan fayre though.

Yeah that was something I thought. He had to go to the hospital a few weeks back before he got the boot, right? I don't know what the issue is, but his health was something that came into my mind.

I doubt if Steve Allen has gone away anywhere. With his regular daily routine of medications he hates being away from home. He's probably lying low in his flat for a while and getting welsh Lynne to do all his grocery shopping in Marks and Sparks or Waitrose. That's if he can't order it on line from Amazon.

Unless he's hiding out in a rented room at the Barmy Arms of course.
