Four Lives

That was really sad .... as was Jack's parents finding out he was bi-curious which was why he had gone to meet Port also.... :(

Did anyone watch the actual documentary on Iplayer - it had the families on and also Port neighbour and Gabriel's flat mate....

Yes I just watched the actual documentary tonight. It said the Police used the excuse about the cost when the families asked for more to be done. I’m disgusted none of the Police involved were even disciplined 😡

same.... they were lazy and really gave off the couldn't be bothered vibe.....

I can't believe some went on to be promoted.... I don't think off the back of this case - at
least I bloody hope they weren't because their actions were disgraceful.... !!

I think the sad reality was the Police saw that they were gay and promiscuous, and from then onwards acted as if they deserved what they got for their lifestyle choice so turned a blind eye. It’s so terribly sad. What a vile man SP was inside and out.

It was amazing how accurate the actors were to the real victims and families.

I haven’t but I will. I thought the neighbour and Gabriel’s flat mate were played so well by the actors.

Watched all of this and it was heartbreaking. One question though that confused me and I’m not sure if I missed something - how did Daniel Whitworth meet Stephen? Was it on grindr, and how did his dating profile say single? That’s the part that I can’t find anything on

Obviously his longterm boyfriend didn’t know he was on the dating websites so he would have said ‘single’ or why be on dating apps? I felt sorry for his boyfriend but he didn’t appear in the documentary and was only mentioned briefly by Daniel’s stepmum when she showed a birthday card from ‘the boys’.

I don’t know which app he used but you saw him on his phone so I think he definitely met him via the dating sites.

Oh I understand - what I meant was I wasn’t sure if it was a fake profile set up by Stephen or it’d been altered in any way, I agree I feel bad for the boyfriend. I hope my comment didn’t come across as insensitive I was genuinely just not sure

I’ve seen the first two episodes and it’s very uncomfortable viewing. One of the mistakes on their own would have bad enough but it was just one after the other.

I can’t imagine going in to report a missing person and the person on the front desk looking up a computer and telling the person their friend is dead! And how could you possibly pass on to Officers that someone has died of hanging when it was deemed a drugs overdose?!

That Family Liaison Officer made me want to punch myself in the face. Me and my husband were both shouting “It’s An-THON-y!” Why wouldn’t their FLO be from local policing in Hull and they liaised with the Met instead of that jackass phoning and asking whether the mum wanted the parts of the body taken for testing back?

After we watch the final part we’ll watch the documentary too. I commend everyone involved for speaking up, I can’t imagine how awful it must be to have your loved one murdered, only for the Police to handle it so atrociously. 2014/2015 we would expect the Police to not be homophobic but sadly that doesn’t appear to be the case.

I just can't get my head around the actions of the police. No doubt there was institutionalised homophobia there, but also an institutionalised apathy too - just no display of empathy at so many levels.

Also, I know it's easy to say with hindsight, but surely some of them would have connected the dots earlier? This makes me think there was some sort of deliberate decision making at play too - maybe cost cutting had become such a priority in that force, at the expense of investigating anything that looked like it was going to use up a lot of resources. Combine this with perhaps a sense of the deaths of young gay men not being as important, or someone how their own fault, then maybe that's how behaviour like this happens, with horrendous consequences.

I did think it was handled well as a drama, but considering Jack's sisters were instrumental in getting the case re-evaluated, it's a shame that felt a bit rushed towards the end

No not at all. I think it’s because Stephen pretended Daniel and Gabriel knew each other as a way of blaming Daniel for Gabriel’s death but they weren’t known to one another. He had obviously met Daniel on one of the dating apps same as the other victims.

I thought it was very well made. Stephen Merchant was very good at playing a creepy murderer, and I must admit I had my doubts when I heard he was playing that role.

It's just so depressing that it was all real. The Police were overloaded, but I think there was an element of homophobia there, too. Very much a "oh well, that's what these people are like" type of attitude.

The part where one of the guy's partner had to say "gay men aren't all the same" brought it home to me. I'm gay and I've never taken a single illegal drug in my life - I wouldn't have a clue about any of them, but I've had people make generalisations about me too just because of my sexuality. You kind of get used to it, but you shouldn't.

It's good Port got a whole life term, so he'll rot in jail for the rest of his life, as he should.

Just watched the doc follow up and good heavens, I can’t express how much rage and sadness I feel. How did the police not join the dots? How can they be so detached and lacking compassion?

What I am finding hard to get my head around is the fact that he can watch this in a sick voyeur way. I read up about him and he was caught having sex with Britain’s most prolific pedophile and also was discussing how Stephen Merchant should not be playing him as they look nothing alike.

Something else that was off, with the first killing when Port reported finding the body he said to the guy on the phone he was driving away so couldn't remember the flat number etc. But then he says he discovered the body outside his flat and went on in to sleep.
