Extend or Move

We are massively fortunate to be in this position , we bought her first home 6 years ago. I absolutely love it, I love the location it's perfect. It's a 3 bed semi detached not massive but it's not tiny.

My partner has never been completely happy with the house, always wanted bigger , more space. In the last year we have been playing with the idea of moving or renovation the current house.

We could extend a little out the back and do an attic conversion and do up the kitchen and spend 100k or alternatively sell up and move , we looked at how much equity we have and how much we'd get with a mortgage this time around. We cannot afford our aspirational home in our location . We have found a house 15 mins out the road which is within our budget, has all the space we need ..

My husband is ready to pack our bags but I'm emotionally attached, I love our home and don't think we need a huge massive house in reality.
Has anyone been in this situation, what would ye do. I just want to sound it out. Don't want to talk about it with family as they'd only drop knowing the price of the new house 😂😂

I would extend if you love the house so much. No point uprooting and moving everything if you have the option to make this house bigger. I’d say if everything else lined up except for needing more space then the extension is the right way to go

Yes I would be inclined to agree with you with improving our current house. However , my husband said he'd probably regret staying in our home yesterday which upset me as it's a great house . I don't think we need a mansion but he thinks it's a shoebox. His words not mine

Location always wins for me, we were in this position a few years back and went down the extend route. We had 4 beds but it was 2 double, 2 single bedrooms so we extended to make the 4th bedroom a double and made the bathroom bigger to have a walk in shower, extended downstairs to have a big kitchen diner, bootroom/utility, downstairs wc. It wasn't easy, we moved out for 6 months. I think the thing that swung it was the location and also looking at other houses we liked we would have had to do similar work, at least replace kitchens and bathrooms and location wasn't as good as where we were. Our eldest daughter was 3.5 at the time and then we moved back in just before she started school and our 2nd baby arrived! So it was quite chaotic, not gonna lie, but I love where we are and would happily stay here forever unless we won the lottery ha. It took us a long time during the planning cos of COVID, getting planning permission took us 6 months, couldn't find any builders willing to take it on...started plans end of 2020 and building work started in 2023.... But I think that has eased up a bit now.
