It's ultimately up to the EBU where it is broadcast/hosted from and the winning country hosting the following year is a tradition, not a rule that needs consent from any participating country. Given the planning time required for this, it's not a surprise the EBU wants to finalise it now, rather than wait. Ukraine have been shown massive support from all over Europe this year, I hardly think not being able to host Eurovision would be on their list of priorities right now.

I had assumed Ukraine were in agreement about this, obviously the situation there is not ideal now... I didn;t realise the deciision could be made without their consent
I thought from early on that it was probably without telling Ukraine tbh. The whole week (? a bit more maybe) leading up to this Ukraine has been saying that they've been scouting out venues and providing safety reports, and answering any questions to the EBU. I expected them to play around the idea of Ukraine for a while, and then make the final to probably host outside of Ukraine in September (as I think that's when the deadline is?)

At the very least, the EBU should have suggested the idea of hosting in UK as a second choice or given the country a choice of where they would like it to be hosted imo. The way the EBU handles these sort of things is honestly so tit

Yeah I agree, if they have done this without informing them this is tit. As people here have said, I would love to have it in the UK but basically hosted by Ukraine or Ukraine and the UK together, I think this would be great (I assumed by this point that Ukraine really wouldn't do it in their country now, unfortunately seeing how the invasion is really dragging on)

Ukraine's broadcaster has issued a statement:

There are other links but none to the direct statement so I've linked to the subreddit thread, but basically, they still want to host and are not happy. So it's not a done deal.

It's alright them saying that but......

1) They only won because of the war so got the sympathy vote.

2) What if they did host it and Putin's army dropped bombs over the venue?

I think hosting it how they want it to be hosted in the UK is a good compromise.

Would it be safe to host the contest in a war zone though? I can see the EBU’s thinking on this, but then I understand why Ukraine are upset as well.

Most of Ukraine is very much NOT a war zone! Only the extreme Eastern and South Eastern edges are! Apart from massive people displacement the Western and Central parts of the country are just carrying on as normal-ish. The implications in the media that the entire country is shelled to bits every day is just not true.

A lot can change in a year between now and the next Eurovision of course, including attitudes depending on how the "PR War" goes in that time, so it probably is right that the EBU make an early call now and look elsewhere though.

Let’s be realistic whilst there is a war in Ukraine it is not safe to hold the competition there.

It’a rubbish they didn’t inform Ukraine of the decision, and I understand the upset. Nevertheless, the decision is right one.

Looking forward to going to this! I wonder what city will be chosen to host… any guesses?

Whichever city has the biggest indoor arena which is not already booked by touring pop acts and importantly can be freed up for a couple of months. Would be brave to try to hold it in one of the outdoor or semi-outdoor venues like Wembley or the Olympic stadium in May.

2) What if they did host it and Putin's army dropped bombs over the venue?
Unlikely to happen

I honestly think the problem would probably be more with the tourism/accessibility side of things? Obviously a lot can happen between now and next year, but if this continues as it's been going I doubt that people are going to easily get to Ukraine* or book hotels just because Eurovision is on

*as I'd understand from some Googling Ukrainian airspace is closed at the moment - would we require special visas for all those Eurovision fans... because obviously you can't suddenly open the airspace for everyone?

Hosting traditions and exceptions[edit]
The tradition of the winning country hosting the following year's event was established in 1958, held in the Netherlands.[69][70][71] A number of exceptions to this rule have occurred since, typically when the winning country had already hosted the event in the recent past. These exceptions are listed below:[72]

  • 1960—hosted by the BBC in London when the Netherlands' NTS declined due to expense, having previously hosted the 1958 contest. The United Kingdom was chosen to host after finishing in second place in 1959.[73]
  • 1963—hosted by the BBC in London when France's RTF declined due to expense, having previously hosted the contest in 1959 and 1961. The second- and third-placed Monaco and Luxembourg also declined when offered hosting duties.[74]
  • 1970—hosted by the NOS in Amsterdam following a ballot to determine the host after the 1969 contest produced four winning countries.[24][75]
  • 1972—hosted by the BBC in Edinburgh when Monaco's Télé Monte Carlo was unable to provide a suitable venue. The Monegasque broadcaster invited the BBC to host the event due to their previous experience.[76]
  • 1974—hosted by the BBC in Brighton when Luxembourg's RTL declined due to expense after hosting the 1973 contest.[6]
  • 1980—hosted by the NOS in The Hague when Israel's IBA declined due to expense after staging the 1979 event. The Dutch offered to host the contest after several other broadcasters, reportedly including runner-up Spain's RTVE and the BBC, were unwilling to do so.[77]
  • 2023—The EBU decided on 17 June 2022 that Ukraine's UA:PBC will not be able to host the event due to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. The EBU began discussions with the BBC to host the event after the United Kingdom finished second in the 2022 contest.[78]
With Australia's invitation to participate in the contest in 2015, it was announced that should they win the contest, Australian broadcaster SBS would co-host the following year's contest in a European city in collaboration with an EBU member broadcaster of their choice.[79][80]

We also need to consider that Eurovision does have a large LGBT following, and while everyone loves Ukraine now (well except for Putin), it is NOT a friendly country as far as LGBT rights go, and that attitude predates the current war with Russia. I don't think it's out and out super hostile to LGBT issues like some African and Middle Eastern countries are, but I don't think it's historically tolerant like Western Europe either. I can't imagine it's suddenly improved since Putin's boys pitched up.

Basically, the BBC pretty much always the go to alternative, presumably because the BBC was the only one with the budget to afford it.

I do worry that with the onslaught of BBC cuts forced by the freeze on the licence fee, inflation, reduced number of licence fee holders the BBC will also struggle to afford it this time.

can we start a go fund me now?? also assuming the local council of whichever venue would help to fund? i think glasgow would be the perfect venue especially with the fire saga link
