Keep hearing that as runners up that if Ukraine can't host next year, the UK will
get to host.
I'm assuming it's coming from this:

I would hope that even if the BBC are involved in some way and even if it does end up being held in the UK, that it is still hosted by Ukraine and still has a Ukrainian feel about it.

The BBC can do all the production etc but it needs to be HOSTED by Ukraine wherever it is held.

Yeah, if the BBC do it, they have to let the Ukrainian broadcaster run the show in terms of the vibe and presenters etc. BBC just do the leg work.

That will never happen, it will likely be a co-host. The last few times the winning nation couldn't host, it was the host country that stepped in to host that got to choose the venue, presenters, theme, and logo, although there aren't really any formalised rules so it will be a case of negotiations with the EBU. The BBC would love to showcase the UK for tourism.

Kalush Orchestra posted they are making demos for Sam Ryder so it looks like there will be a collab.

i think a lovely idea for the postcards would be to show uk cities twinned with places in ukraine (eg. odessa with liverpool, rochdale with lviv) or create new links with places that aren't yet associated and highlight a new 'special relationship' in a cultural sense. obviously there's cases like cardiff twinned with luhansk which may not be classed as ukraine in the future with how things are going in the east but that'll be something to figure out nearer the time. this could be something that is furthered in the future too with cities fundraising for specific areas that need to be rebuilt, almost like pen pals i guess!

EBU Statement: https://eurovision.tv/mediacentre/r...87pOXE1wmH7Eetl_iThN_a_OkMn_Jtn-K9zz04CUzUgHo

Following their win at the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in May the EBU has been exploring options for the hosting of next year’s competition with Ukraine’s public broadcaster UAPBC, who previously staged the event in 2017 and 2005.

It has become a well-known tradition that the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest hosts the competition the following year, providing certain criteria including ensuring the viability of staging the event and the safety of all stakeholders, including the public, are met.

Given the ongoing war since the Russian invasion of this year’s winning country, the EBU has taken the time to conduct a full assessment and feasibility study with both UAPBC and third-party specialists including on safety and security issues.

The Eurovision Song Contest is one of the most complex TV productions in the world with thousands working on, and attending, the event and 12 months of preparation time needed.

Following objective analysis, the Reference Group, the ESC’s governing board, has with deep regret concluded that, given the current circumstances, the security and operational guarantees required for a broadcaster to host, organize and produce the Eurovision Song Contest under the ESC Rules cannot be fulfilled by UAPBC.

The EBU would like to thank UAPBC for their wholehearted cooperation and commitment in exploring all scenarios in the weeks since Kalush Orchestra’s win on 14 May in Turin and share their sadness and disappointment that next year’s Contest cannot be held in Ukraine.

The EBU has been supporting UAPBC across a whole range of areas since the invasion. We will ensure that this support continues so UAPBC can maintain the indispensable service they provide to Ukrainians.

As a result of this decision, in accordance with the rules and to ensure the continuity of the event, the EBU will now begin discussions with the BBC, as this year’s runner up, to potentially host the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest in the United Kingdom.

It is our full intention that Ukraine’s win will be reflected in next year’s shows. This will be a priority for us in our discussions with the eventual hosts.

Should have made a new 2023 thread :) Love that we should be hosting.

😭 this is so exciting!!!

that being said, I really hope this becomes a case of the BBC providing the venue, some financial help and collaboration in the organisation of how things should go. The interval acts and hosting really should be left to Ukraine, maybe with some song about peace which includes British artists

I’m also a bit worried that this will have similar vibes to the COVID show where it’s not really enjoyable because the organisers want to make a point/not be distasteful about the situation

I agree I think if we do host it, it should still feel as Ukrainian as possible

Maybe once it's been confirmed ;) (Let's face it, no way will the beeb turn this down)

BBC have also made a statement: https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/statements/ebu-eurovision-song-contest/

“We have seen the announcement from the EBU. Clearly these aren’t a set of circumstances that anyone would want. Following their decision, we will of course discuss the BBC hosting the Eurovision Song Contest.”

Spot on. They won and we didn't. If we host it should have Ukraine hosts and be presented exactly as they would have wanted it to be if they could have done it at home.

Millenium Stadium should be the venue and I am English so it's not Welsh bias haha. Just in 2002 in Denmark around 38,000 is the biggest audience ever but there with the roof as protection incase it rains you could double it.

I think we should have a mixture of Ukranian and British hosts ... someone on twitter suggested Rylan and Verka. 😁

I’m soooo excited for seeing Verka again
I bloody love Verka, she's been very vocal about the Russian invasion (her entry was a subversive protest song) and has been banned from Russia for 50 years (along with a long list including Jamala). Her response was that she is only disappointed that she won't get to go to Putin's funeral.

If Graham gets to host in any capacity he'll prob do what Terry did last time and run off to do commentary. I think apart from maybe one host and (as some suggested on the subreddit) a bagpipes rendition of Shum ;) the UK's role should be as much behind the scenes as possible.

I agree, I would rather Graham just stayed doing the commentary, it is one of my favourite things about watching

Doesn‘t one of the hosts have to be able to speak French? I remember in 2008 Ulrika was chosen as Terry’s co host because she’s a fluent French speaker.

Ukraine's broadcaster has issued a statement:

There are other links but none to the direct statement so I've linked to the subreddit thread, but basically, they still want to host and are not happy. So it's not a done deal.

I had assumed Ukraine were in agreement about this, obviously the situation there is not ideal now... I didn;t realise the deciision could be made without their consent

I suppose if you look at how heavy handed they were with the 'voting irregularities' it's not a huge surprise. But yes, I assumed there had been an agreement with Ukraine after extensive discussions. I guess not.

I don't know whether the BBC will do it without Ukraine's consent. I would hope not.

Agreed, I would be very angry if the BBC would go against Ukraine like this, it would be a show of total non support imo, I wonder what would happen alternatively? Would they find another country completely?
