It's because they have to find something for Bernie to talk about when she has no story or purpose. It's a bit like Dot gossiping but without the religious overtones.

I suspect keeping Bernie has something to do with LGB representation (or large people representation) because I can’t think of any other reason other than some boxes being ticked.

Will she be caught up in the fire in the caff, it will be very sad and traumatic 😢 maybe that’s why Karen leaves
 
The reason I think it could be Martin is actually because he’s the last Fowler. If James Bye wants to leave and and has implied he won’t be coming back, the story would need to be huge, he couldn’t just leave in the back of a taxi. And you don’t get much bigger than this (although saying that you could argue this is a big story for the women, not the victim)
 
Theo plays the innocent act very well. Letting Martin rant and kick his front door, then appearing calmly saying he will call the police.
And the other night when he appeared and asked Stacey about the bins. He’s seriously creepy!
But you can see how he’s getting away with it for now. Nice young teacher, well spoken, only wants to help others.
I‘m 90% sure he is going to be the body at Christmas.
 
I’m starting to think the ruckus in the pub involves the various bad ‘uns we believe who have a love-hate link to the six, a couple of good-for-nothing return Walford residents, and the body on the floor is a bystander who dies accidentally (So EE will film various endings but aire one)
