Dame Jilly Cooper fans are in for a treat as the first trailer of the hotly anticipated adaptation of Rutshire “bonkbuster” Rivals has been revealed

Like most fans, I have my own mental pictures of the characters and I know you can't please everybody. Plus Jilly always writes characters as being impossibly, inhumanly beautiful so must be a nightmare to cast... but...

... at first look, I still think the casting is awful. The famously blond Rupert played by an actor with black hair? Bull-necked, swarthy Tony Baddingham played by pencil - neck Tennant? Come on...

The Rutshire Chronicles are comfort reading for me and I'll probably watch anyway, but I will be substituting my own mental pictures...! Who else will be watching?

Oh boy. If they’ve messed with a basic like that, I’m not sure how watchable this is going to be. I can’t just set aside knocking on forty years of guiltily fancying absolute rotter RCB on the head with that terrible piece of casting! Boo. Tennant is also a ghastly choice, and isn't Maud O’Hara famously a redhead? Even if the actors so absolutely nailed the audition that they had to have the parts, wigs exist ffs 🤣

Freddie Fox? Maybe too pretty though. For sure, Rupe is a challenging cast!

Gutted they got the casting so wrong. It was exactly the same when they made Riders, I had to stop watching as it was so far away from the book that I've loved since it was first published. I've literally lost count of the number of times I've read the early Rutshire chronicles. They're such a comfortable read.
 
Agree with all of this. Love love love these books! Have to say though, I watched Maxton Hall and when I saw Damian Hardung I immediately thought that’s Rupert Campbell Black. Blonde, blue eyed and preppy…..not English though….but rather lovely 🥰!

I always pictured Rupert Penry Jones as RCB. He's got three names and one of them is even Rupert 🤣

Alex Hassell is definitely not him. I have no idea what they were thinking when he was cast.
 
RCB has to be blonde!

This is terrible casting, and I'm not sure I can bring myself to watch it, much as I love the Rutshire world. It's been a guilty pleasure of mine for 30 years since my then best friend persuaded me to start reading the books. RCB was her favourite character and perfect man, she would have been horrified by this choice. I remember she was irritated enough when they used Marcus Gilbert in Riders!

They always seem to interpret RCB as sleazy. "Er, hellaaaiiirrr" 😜 No - he's cool and detached.

Honestly, I think no. They cast like they had the books explained to them by someone else. Who also hasn't read them😄
