Listen to Steve Wright’s recent interview with Peter Kay if you can. I’ll miss all his shows. I loved his afternoon show and haven’t listened to R2 at that time of day, since. Can’t abide Scott Mills.

Radio 5Live was wonderful tonight with Elvis & Mr Angry as well as most of the R2 presenters. What a sad day and I’m not sure But think his daughter lives in the US. Imagine getting that call. God bless his family. He was an absolute legend.

I'm really sad about this, Steve Wright has been a part of my life for so long, I was shocked to hear the news of his death.
I can remember listening to his R1 show on the way home from work every afternoon, back in the late 80's. I had a Walkman which had a radio, and I've spent many bus journeys home, hunched against a rainy window, laughing my head off (Mick Jagger talking about "chafing" after riding his bike, was a highlight 🤣)
I had my songs played on "Non-stop Oldies", it was a real thrill to hear my name on the radio, I made everyone I know tune in that day!
What a huge loss he is to radio. A sad day indeed. 😥

I was reading that Steve had been his father's full-time carer for the past 2 years, maybe goes some way to explaining Steve being happy staying with Radio 2, but cutting back on his workload.

Yeah, I really don’t buy this narrative he was sacked. He wasn’t. He reduced his shows very graciously. It’s been reported he also had his own health problems which is why he was happy to step back. Radio 2 were also using Steve Wright to try and draw older audiences to their BBC Sounds Content, much of which was lead by Steve Wright. And these new radio stations they’re bringing out weren’t thought up last week. These will have been months, potentially well over a year, in the planning. Steve Wright was meant to be the lead on the Radio 2 one.

The idea of being sacked makes it seem like it was unceremonious and that Steve wasn’t happy with the outcome. The reality is he was probably offered double his salary by Global but decided to stay with Radio 2 because he was enjoying what he was doing.

The guy was 69, not everyone wants to carry on working 9-5 at that age no matter how much they love their job.

'He never recovered from being axed by radio 2'

I’m so sad today I just want to go and cry I am just devastated by Steve passing. I know I didn’t know him personally but I felt I did.
my colleagues are younger and hadn’t heard of him 😠 one had only heard of the Ipswich serial killer and thought I meant him….
Millions of folk feel the same, a constant companion on radio for 40 years.
Must admit I have had something in my eye all morning.
Just my opinion but radio is far more personal than watching tv.
There's not many of these long-standing broadcasters left sadly.

I know first Paul o’Grady now Steve. All the good ones are going. I have no time for the woke tit presenters they have now. I don’t mind vernon but that’s all. Since Steve’s afternoon show finished I stopped listening to R2 live and listen to POTP and sounds of 80s and a few other bits on sounds but that’s all.
I appreciate she had a very difficult job yesterday but Sara cox was not fit to lick his boots. She is tit but just myopinion.

helen Thomas had a bleeping cheek saying what a brilliant irreplaceable presenter he was (or words to that effect). If he was why did she axe his show.

For me it was the same when Terry Wogan died.
I'd been through quite a bad time some years ago including sleepless nights and his kind world weary voice in the dark at 7am (I think or was it 6?) saying things like 'well here we are again lads. We've made it this far. Well done' made things a bit better. Zoe's forced bounciness at that hour would not have helped at all.
Steve didn't mean as much to me as Terry tbh, but I really get how a beloved person on the radio can affect you deeply. It's a very unique relationship if done well (and effortlessly).
