Surprised at how sad I am to hear this. Feels like the old guard has very much gone now. But yes sounds incredibly sudden, I suspect a heart attack or something similar. Thoughts are with his family and friends ❤

Yeah, I think he had just recorded a Valentine's Sunday Love Songs special too.
Very sad indeed, he was a radio mainstay for decades, getting people through their afternoons.
I thought Steve would go on for years, like his pal Tony Blackburn.

I used to listen to Steve when I was at school and he did Steve Wright in The Afternoon on R1. To a young teenager, the gags were funny and often a bit close to the knuckle, I thought they were hilarious. Linda Lust and her spatula (if anyone remembers that!)

I’m so sad! He said on Sunday (pre recorded love songs) see you next week so I’m assuming it’s unexpected and sudden?

He was a pioneer in so many ways. He brought zoo format radio to afternoons and made it his own for three decades. As many who worked with him have said in tribute, he was a true perfectionist for whom the first take was never good enough. A very sad day in radio land.

A big shock. Lovely to read the tributes on X. Loved listening to his shows and it seemed like he was starting to get more work on R2. Love the show we would laugh when people put it on their shout outs! Trying to get one ourselves when we were listening over half terms in the car. Very difficult for Sara and Simon to deliver this news

Ken Bruce said he was shocked as he and Steve had arranged a lunch to celebrate his MBE.

Paul Gambaccini just talking on Front Row on R4 about him.
He said Steve died yesterday, but they only found out at R2 10 minutes before the public did - so incredibly hard for Sara Cox to carry on after that.
Paul had spoken to him at the weekend, they were very good friends, had emailed him twice today, obviously not knowing what had happened, to arrange to meet up next week.

Steve wasn’t sacked, he literally did a show on Sunday and they’d just announced a new sister Radio 2 station which Steve Wright was meant to be fronting.
