Just listened to 'Young Again' - a podcast on Radio 4 with Kirsty Young interviewing famous people about their younger selves.
I had forgotten how much I disliked her interviewing style. Completely toadying. Her questions are along the lines of 'you're amazing. How do you cope with being so amazing?'.

I heard the trail for that, thought it sounded interesting but I didn't want to hear her doing it.

OK, so I tried to give Late Night Becky (BBC Local all-England) a try. Listened for five torturous nights.

First of all, only thing "local" about it? It's being broadcast via the local stations. If this was a financial product I would consider myself mis-sold and complain to the the FCA.

It's live radio that sounds dead, mainly due to all the pre-recorded interviews that play out, with teaser clips played repeatedly. Groundhog night.

The last straw was last night "Let's play Trivial Pursuit, which actress played Rachel in Friends? Ring if you think you know the answer!". Someone actually phoned in with the answer. It's an insult.

Storms and floods all over the country (with three people killed) is when BBC local stations need to be available with specific information and warnings, especially for those (many vulnerable) who are not online.

Instead, last night , anyone in England who tuned to their local BBC radio station got "Late Night Jo" who mentions the weather and says excitedly that listeners can call in to tell her what's happening, as if it's some sort of fun event. Needless to say this "coverage" was mere lip service which would never be able to provide the essential communication the state broadcaster should offer in such a situation. Presumably they didn't want to interupt the show which consisted of her luvvie-in with Julian Clary, a chat with Jimmy Doherty about his tourist attraction farm, and her Barking Hour dog chat with her mate Anna.

Has anybody been listening to the play Mahabarat Now on Radio 4?
Sounds like it could be dry but it is so good.
BBC can still be so good at radio plays. There were some recent ones with Glenda Jackson which were excellent too. What a voice actress she was.

I hadn't realised that was on, I'll add it to my list; the Glenda J ones sound good too.

Have Radio 2 put put any tribute on social media to Bill Kenwright? He did some lovely shows for them only a year or 2 ago. I saw that Tony Blackburn paid tribute but thought it amiss of Rafio 2 not to as there were 2 or 3 radio series that he broadcast. I may have missed it but there was nothing on their Facebook page.

Tina Daheley is so bad in Jeremy’s slot. Poor interviewer. I’m saying this as the only Jeremy Vine fan in the world 🤣

I can't listen... Topics he would absolutely milk for humour are just a slog when she's presenting.
---
For example... 'Have you been plagued by snails?' That would've honestly been laugh a minute with Jeremy if his 'Have pigeons got inside your property?' and 'Have you ever been targeted by a crow?' topics are anything to go by!

Some presenters are not good on Radio, Tina presented BBC News @ 6pm the other night & was fine but having to ad-lib on Radio is totally different.

Agreed - She's quite serious which works for the news but not an interactive call in show. I wish the presenters would find another fill in. I used to love Vanessa Feltz covering but she's left now.

I have Nicky Campbell on R5 from 09:00 and I have really warmed to him again as a broadcaster (I liked him when I was younger). He tackles all the kinds of political debates that are going on at the moment, with experts and calls from members of the public (more weighted towards the latter). He also covers lighter chit-topics when they arise.

I also think he's been incredibly courageous about the abuse he suffered at school and he has given evidence to the public enquiry in Scotland about it.

I've been listening for probably the last year or so, looking for something else to listen to after the downward spiral of Radio London.

Yes, Nicky's a really good broadcaster, for a while there his 5live show (the 9-10am segment).was being simulcast on BBC2 tv, since the Palestine stuff started though it's just been rolling BBC News channel, I enjoyed watching his radio studio show being shown on tv.

Oh I heard him mentioning that, but I see from the schedules that it's back to BBC News on TV, presumably so they can cover live stories quickly at the moment.

I find Dotun a terrible listen but he's being given even more, absolute ear-ache

The dire new local/national output can only be to drive away listeners, so the BBC can move completely to digital by showing how few are tuning in to their "local" station. I feel sorry for Becky Want, I didn't know her before but she seems a cheery and competent presenter who is stuck 5 nights a week trailing repeated clips of pre-recorded interviews with the likes of James Blunt and a Nolan sister, with a mish-mash of music and a few dreary randoms phoning in. Then on the weekends there's Jo Good manically screeching about anything, talking all the way throught songs, ego pumped that after 30 years she is finally "national".
