I posted something similar on the Leah Itsines thread then I realised I’d love to have this conversation here.
I’m a massive podcast fan. But I think the craft of radio (now, podcasts) has been lost to influencers who can easily get a podcast with no training or substance for what to say. It’s actually surprisingly hard to be good at audio. It’s not like just having a conversation. Podcasts are very difficult to listen to when the host speaks too fast or interrupts, or doesn’t understand how to tell a story. Here’s my review of some of the popular podcasters I’ve listened to over the years… I’d love to read reviews from others? 😍

Abbie Chatfield: her rants are hilarious and she makes me a bit more woke 😅 But sometimes she just speaks way too fast, I can’t understand her.

Em Rusciano: you can tell she is old school professional broadcaster, especially if you listen to her monologue at the start of each ep where she asks “how are you,” and effortlessly moves from one topic to the next. She’s really good at cutting a topic off at just the right time. And it seems basic, but she knows how to use a microphone 😂 she moves closer/back depending on volume and uses that change in sound to emphasis points or as humour in a story. So good.

Mia Freedman: haven’t listened in a while but was super impressed with her interview skills. She asks a question and then sits silent to let her guest just SPEAK. No interruptions! She knows when the answer is coming to a natural end, and comes back in at the right time to ask the next question, which also naturally flows on from the last answer. Her voice is also “layered” (can’t think of the right word) which is really pleasant for audio.

Jacob Stanley: fairly new podcaster but also a natural! Relaxing voice. Fantastic storyteller.

Tully Smyth: I really want to support her but I could not get through any of the eps I listened to. She interrupts the guests to give her own answer to the question she just asked. Some of the episodes lacked purpose. I think there was more focus on the IDEA of having a podcast than the actual podcast.

Rosie Waterland: another one who interrupts a fair bit, but she’s self aware and makes fun of herself. Her podcast Just The Gist.. is so clever. Cool stories, the formula of her telling the story to Jacob just works. I love her voice, she says she nasally but I love it. 😂 Another great storyteller, great writer, great creative.

Shameless: these two are pros and have developed over years. Sometimes their takes can be a little ill-thought, but they have mastered their episode structure, timing per segment is spot on, they know their purpose (sugary celeb goss) and don’t leave their lane.

I could keep going! But too long…

I agree that podcasts are easy to start. I'm surprised by how tit some of the popular ones are- Australian true crime with meshel Laurie, outspoken, Abbie chatfield and the life uncut girls. Surprisingly, the outspoken girls consider themselves 'journalists' and three others and radio gigs.
I disagree that Mia freedman is a good interviewer- I think she has a good producer. When she makes part 2 of her podcast subscriber only, I look up the guest to see if they have been interviewed by someone else. Usually they have been and usually the other interview is better.

I second Mia being a bad interviewer. She tries to insert herself into her guest’s experience, she plays up the salacious details for clickbait (asking a divorced woman about getting laid for the first time) because she’s clearly sheltered as tit. She gets no interesting revelations and usually the guest has done the rotation on much better podcasts. She has no concept of her own privilege and never acknowledges it.

The constant questions about sex!!!! I can only assume they are a reflection on the lack of sex in her own life?

I would disagree that Shameless are pros…they have so many gaps in their pop culture knowledge, for people who pride themselves on being “experts” I also just find their voices annoying lol

I think they just started quite young and instead of really furthering themselves with knowledge and education they took the 'influencer' with a skill path and lapped up as much as they could and stayed pretty vacuous.

Completely agree with this. I had to stop listening as they spoke of doing “deep dive” or “looking at something from all angles”. But I often found discussions missing detail or nuance. I feel like they borrowed heavily from the UK pod “The High Low” and it’s format. But just didn’t have the same extensive experience. Or it’s probably just that I’m just an old duck 🤣

Oh they 100% copied the high low. I started listening after being a high low fan and couldn’t believe how much they had ripped off. I actually thought their name came from the shameless way they basically copied the high low but added a touch more sugar and left the big headlines alone.

as for the dom and Megan drama. I. Annoy remember the one and ours but it seemed to go spur a few weeks after dom’s ‘my body, my choice witch’ party. I think Megan did a bit of a negative segment on dom, maybe to counterbalance the criticism she was coping for being so biased and then it seems dom cannot take a touch of criticism and they fell out. Megan did a q and a podcast about it which she has since deleted although I think it’s on her patron and I just cannot remember what she said sorry but it was all just a bit samey on both sides. Both v righteous and opinionated. She’s pretty critical of dom now and even implied she was a sexual predator for her Robert Irwin comments which is ridiculous.

Ooh I haven’t heard of The High Low before but I am a Shameless fan and if they have ripped off someone else, chances are I’ll enjoy the original 🥰 Thanks for the rec 🙊

The High Low is no longer being made but you should still be able to access it I think. It was hosted by Pandora Sykes & Dolly Alderton.

Life uncut is really scraping the barrel if they are interviewing listeners now.
For context, there is someone very active in the Facebook groups for posting about vibrators, sex, wanting dick etc

She posted this today:

Just forced myself to listen to Outspoken’s latest ep.. some chat about how there needs to be a different/better name for “photo dump”
One of them “Steph Claire Smith posted with the caption camera poop emojis and it took me while to figure out what she meant” 🤦🏼‍♀️🙄 omg could they be any more dense?! 🥴
Ok and maybe this is just a “me” thing lol 🤷‍♀️ they’re obvi not the only people who do this, but I find it so weird when they’re talking about THEIR mum/cousin/best friend etc and they say “MY” …like whatever but it’s all of YOUR *insert fam member* not just yours 😂
