Australian Open 2023

If I was the umpire I'd start the clock a second earlier to try and set him off again 😉

Not that the umpire did anything wrong last time and his "that's not how it works" has been a highlight

It’s Djokovic’s 10th Australian Open final…and he’s won all 9 of the past ones he’s been in. You wouldn’t bet against him, would you! But having said that, could this injury hinder him? Could be an exciting match

All it takes is one dodgy landing and that injury will flare up. Fingers crossed for a good match.

The commentators were saying he didn't have many opportunities for points this year. Were they talking crap to fill? Apart from the US open where else can't he play (unless the entry requirements change)? He can go to France and Wimbledon will have points this year.

He's gonna miss Indian Wells, Miami, and Cincinnati as well and those are all masters 1000 events.

Shanghai may not come back either so there goes another 1000 potential points.

What a boring women's final.

An thanks, that's a lot of 1000 tournaments. I guess he might not want to risk the injury with some of the lower events.

I never watch the women’s I must say.

i rarely do too. i don’t think they have any interesting players on the tour right now (though i am a gauff fan).

i love how djokovic plays tennis, there’s something so balletic in how he moves, but my dislike of him as a person means i can never truly root for him. he is sadly on a completely different level from any other guys on the circuit though.

Yeah I only really watch the finals if I'm around. I want to support it though 😬. It's got a bit better since the dire first set.

There were tickets available easily for the Wimbledon women's final last year, but I didn't think it was worth £240. Mens final tickets at face value are near impossible.

There's a reason why they at best get half the viewers of the men's, especially now as there's few names.

Tennis does a bit of damage to the (valid) pay and investment issues in other womens sports imo. But that's a whole other topic.

The lack of consistency imho is a major reason why the woman's game is less interesting. It's hard to stay engaged when you get all sorts of randos winning Grand Slams, only to disappear afterwards. No fan can consistently follow their favourites when their favourites are out in the first or second round in future tournaments.

People also care more about how attractive a female athlete is compared to a male one. None of the Big 3 are major lookers but that doesn't really matter when it comes to fan interest, whereas you have people like Raducanu and Kournikova getting all the attention, while better players like Swiatek and Barty are barely generating any interest outside their home countries. Lack of consistency + lack of star power unless you're conventionally attractive means people just don't care as much about the women's game.

Yep, totally agree with that all. Someone high up at the awarding for the women's yesterday was celebrating equal pay, but there's a long way to go in tennis. These sports stars are basically entertainment so it's pretty meaningless for the normal persons wage disparity.

A woman playing tennis only gets the megabucks if they're also pretty. They can be a unaccomplished player but still make a fortune if theyre pretty. It's easy to do something like start selling bags of sweets for £5 that cost 20p to manufacture to make millions, but only if you have model looks.

On the same topic Alize lim is absolutely awful at presenting. But I'm not surprised Eurosport gave her that job despite being incapable. Carrying on entrenching that inequality.

The AO often feels like it has the worst traits of the Americans and Brits. I guess they have to have it late in the evening for the worldwide viewers, but all those people tanked up are really obnoxious.

Was tsitsipas really complaining about the white text on the screen ads?
