American Murder: The Family Next Door - Netflix

With regards to the mistress - there's something very off there. I just get the feeling she knew more than she was letting on. Apparently she was googling wedding dresses soon after they got together and............. how to prepare yourself for anal sex. The wedding dress thing seems particularly odd given he was married and thye hadn't been seeing each for more than a few weeks.

In the context of having a relationship with someone who murdered his pregnant wife and two children it would raise an eyebrow no?
I don’t think so. Those in relationships with married but separated people (kids aren’t relevant) don’t act different than any other relationship as far as I know. Head in the sand, wishful thinking call it what you will. He said He was leaving his wife so their future looked rosy to her.
Plus, there’s no context, she could have googled a wedding dress to show him what her friend had picked then had a silly conversation ‘let’s decide what we’re going to wear when we’re wed’ Because they were being happy and silly and falling in love she thought. Not actually seriously picking a dress.
Googling anal sex isn’t remotely suspicious or relevant to anything.
Someone pointed out before, how did they get all this info about what she was googling?? She didn’t appear to be investigated that heavily to check her phone/computer data.

I think Nikki's biggest crime was having an affair with a married man. She had clearly fancied him for a while and was all too ready to believe him when he said they were separating. Shanann was away at that time too so he could lie easily.

I don't believe she didn't know about the pregnancy as she had looked at Shanann's profile and there was no hiding of the pregnancy on there.

He's the one in the wrong though and not Nikki.

I've done so much deep diving into this case and disappeared down various rabbit holes.

I think there's still a lot of focus on Chris when really he should be locked away and forgotten. Instead he has people interviewing him, writing to him, and stuff being published where he gets to try and control the narrative. I get why this is happening as he hid his psychopathy so well that nobody could have predicted what he did.

People will naturally be fascinated by the "but why did he make this decision" issue though so I do get it.
However in a way I want the interest in HIM to just disappear and for him to lose the interest and attention he likely craves.

I also think the documentary showed Shanann as a hysterical and bossy person and I'm not sure that's completely accurate. She was definitely a go getter and very focused....lots of women are like this and their husbands don't murder them. Chris had it all, a lovely home, a beautiful wife and two gorgeous little girls with a little boy on the way and he threw all this away as though it was trash. He's lost everything and I'm glad he won't ever see the light of day again.

Agree totally

i think it was a shame Shanann was presented like that because really the overriding impact should have been what a brilliant mum she was to those girls.

I've read the book "letters from Chris"..... He has openly said he planned the murders for about 2 weeks. Interestingly Nichol told him to Google the song lyrics of metellica "battery" on his way home from the oil site where he put the girls in battery tanks?! How did the police think this wasn't suspicious.

Her family said that the makers of the documentary worked closely with them and wanted their thoughts and approval. Her brother said they were very happy with the documentary and were glad how Shannan was presented, her videos, etc.

That may be their opinion but so far numerous people on this thread have said they found her annoying and overbearing which unfairly detracts from her somewhat.

I found her okay. I could see why people could find her annoying but I didn't get that. I don't love people that overshare online though and she def was one of those people...presenting a happy family front.

What made her say this? Was it like she he mentioned where he’d been, or she knew he was at work and it made her think battery and so she said ‘oh I meant to say, google the lyrics to battery’
she worked in the company and she knew his job so she’d have been familiar with what they were called.
I don’t get the context of why this would be suspicious?

god i can’t get this case out my head at all it’s the first and last thing i think about on the morning and at night it’s truly horrified me and i can’t even sleep alone anymore
I’m reading this thread now and it’s 4am and I’m in absolutely bits 😭😭😩 I knew of the case previously and watched loads of different stuff on YouTube but to read so much detail and see more “media attention” brings all the raw emotion back. My heart breaks for Shanann & the kids. God bless them.

Read the chorus lyrics I think that’s why people found it odd and strange 🤢

To be honest I'm not getting the no emotion/ no reaction thing that some of you are picking up from his dad. I thought his dad seemed like a broken man in the interview room, his head was in his hands and to me it seemed like he just couldn't believe what was happening and in total shock.
I agreee and I also think he was trying to remain composed in the hopes of getting more information from his son.

Yes! I've just finished listening to this and she is awful! She thinks her son has done nothing wrong whatsoever, she is completely deluded.
Even the tone she uses when he was "interrogated" as though they were doing that wrongfully when the police obviously knew from the get go that he was not being truthful about the situation.

She really thinks her son, and herself are the victims in all this!
I can't believe how annoyed she was that she had to talk to he son from being a screen because he was being held in prison after confessing to murdering his wife and three children.

She said "it was like they already knew he was guilty" because they wouldn't let them see him while in custody, ummm he CONFESSED!!

For anyone that wants to watch

Wow!
If you knew nothing about the case and watched the first 6 minutes of this, you’d think Shanann was the perpetrator and Chris the victim. Unbelievable! You can tell she thinks Shanann killed the girls. What a deluded woman.

For me it was the fact her phone pinged in the town they lived in when she lived a fair distance away the morning of the murders. There is no convenient explanation for that one. Had he pleaded 'not guilty' they would have investigated her and I'm sure much more would have come out.

Also he said nichol was on medication.... What if she was the one that supplied the drug he used to try and make shanann lose the baby. He said he will take to the grave who gave it to him!! This hasn't been looked into properly at all

I wonder if he plead guilty just to protect her.

ETA - I don't know how the American legal system works but it may have been to avoid the death penalty although I believe Shannan's parents did not want him to face that.

I watched this yesterday and just caught up on the thread.
What an evil man.

One thing I wondered about was why was her friend so concerned so early on?
If I had dropped off my friend at 2am and then she wasn’t answering texts or calls in the morning, I’d assume she was having a lie in. What was it that made her friend contact the police so soon? I think she said Shanann had been distraught that weekend. Perhaps she was concerned that she might commit suicide because I can’t see any other reason why the police would rush over so soon. This wasn’t really explained in the documentary.

I also think he killed the girls at home before he killed Shanann. When Shanann was texting him from the airport, she asked where the girls were. He replied that they were asleep. I think they were already dead then.

I found their wedding video so sad. Shanann’s family clearly adored Chris so he was either a very good actor or he changed greatly after the marriage. His mother clearly didn’t think Shanann was good enough for her son. He then loses 180lbs which is a huge amount. Did I mishear the amount because that’s over a 12 stone loss? He looked overweight at their wedding but not obese. After the weight loss I think he changed and he thought he could do better too.

The way he treated them after death was truly despicable. I wouldn't be able to stand by my son if he’d done that so it says a lot about his mother too that she remains so deluded about what he has done.
